It has more to do with engine capacity, so if you put a larger 4cyl into a 4cyl than you need to check how much bigger in capacity you can go
The later Cortinas came out as either a 4 or 6 so the largest engine you could fit without hassle was the 4.1L 6cyl
So for the Mk1 you need to find out the largest engine that could be optioned, then find out how much bigger in capacity you can go above that.
