There is people still using 27mhz but not many like years ago, the equipment is getting harder to come by, Sideband is more popular than AM.
If you need help setting up Jaycar electronics should be able to help you out in the antenna & cable department.
You could google to see if you have any cb clubs over your way that could help more on info.
I have AM/SSB rig in my garage which occasionally I fire up at times, do get a lot on sideband & the odd chatter on AM.
UHF is the go these days.
