I don't think she went out in to international waters, she would have been tracked all the way from Melbourne via her AIS (Automatic identification system)
You can see where she is right now on Marine Traffic by clicking on the link below, It's a VHF based tracker but if you spend the money you can get the satellite subscription and follow AIS equipped vessels worldwide, AMSA/RCC and state based VTS (Vessel Traffic Service) have satellite tracking so would know exactly where she went, hence why what they did is to dumb for words...
