Hi Mad, sorry, never got an email about your response.

Yeah, the cluster had been fiddled with by someone before I owned the car, some cracked internal plastics and what not. They weren't prepared to warrant their work on it, and not prepared to do work they aren't comfortable to warrant, given the unknown history, so disappointing, but fully understandable.

I ended up resolving the issue on the cluster, I found a loose wire while I was initially fault finding on the speedo problem that according to the wiring diagram I had looked as though it was meant to be the idle up for aircon on wire, but when I put a jumper on it, all the warning lights cleared up and the tacho is working. No idea what it actually was, but happy enough to know that it now works.

Phew!!

Oh and to my original question, no, no differences between a series 2 and series 3 XR6 cluster as far as wiring is concerned. Ha ha.
