Yes- you should be able to hear the fuel pump priming when the ignition is on & ready to crank (but only for a few seconds).
Yes - the system runs a much higher pressure than an older carby style set up.
I doubt it's the fuel filter - as the car would start & run for at least 30 seconds before starving of fuel.
Have a look on the fuel injection rail for a relief valve (Schraeder type like a tyre valve). Press in the valve & see if the fuel system is pressurised.
