Smile What petrol is the best for standard ECU on EF/EL I6?

Hello fellow Ford owners. What petrol should I be sticking in my EFII? Would it make any difference running on a higher level than 91? I wonder what everyone else thinks?

on an EF, i don't imagine much of a difference.
with an EL you could get a bit more base timing so potential for a bit more power.

I'd stick with 91, my ef seems to run like a dog and use a ton of fuel when i use even 95 (i'd hate to think what 98 would do). If you could wind up the advance and get them to run a bit leaner, then that would be a different story.
On 91 i get about 550-600km out of a tank, 95 gets me about 450km on the same country roads on cruise control most of the way.

All you people who put premium into a stock EF and thinking you are getting more power are wasting you money :

do you people even know what octane does?

The octane rating is a measure of the autoignition resistance of petrol and other fuels used in spark-ignition internal combustion engines. in other words the higher the octain the slower the fuel burns.

high octane fuels that carry less energy per liter than lower octane fuels

Unless you have a high compresion engine or some sort of forced induction where more fuel is used and high resistance to detination is needed premium actualy gives less power.

But still gives better economy. So either way you are still on a winner, plus premo burns cleaner.

Interesting you say that. About 5 years ago when I first got my EF I wrote to Street Machine on this subject. KB wrote back to me, that DYNO TESTS had concluded that premium fuel (96 they used) would give a DYNO PROVEN 4rwkw over 91 octane fuel. This was due to the EF's running a knock sensor and coil packs rather than a dizzy. If you had an EA-ED or EL you could manually advance the timing to get similar results, but the EF would compensate through EEC fuel maps for the extra octane.

So I would like to know where you got your info from? Not saying it is wrong at all, but intrigued as to where the different stories are coming from ;)

I believe what your saying as KB knows his stuff. So I guess for an EF primium would give more power which is what this thread is about, I was talking more about stocko cars in general.
I got my Info from an ex-mechanic now teacher at TAFE while doing a course as an Automotive technitian. I also had a look around a few websites like www.howstuffworks.com for some more info to confirm this. Also from running premium in my EF and not noticing and difference in power or econemy. Personaly paying and extra 10cents a litre for 4kw isnt worth it to me.
And even if you do get slightly more out of a tank, if i put $50 of premo in or $50 of regular the extra fuel i get for my money if I use regular would probly get me further than the premium anyway.

I've always put 91 in the EF but in the VS I've used 95 for the last 5 or 6 tanks. No power difference at all - in fact I think I've dropped about 50kms off my range and it idles poorer now. Definately changing back to 91.

Apparently, to see a difference between 98 and 100 octane you need to put the car on the dyno and tune it specifically for the fuel in the car...heard a few of the guys in saloon cars say that just putting 100 in after 98 won't change anything until you tune the car to suit the fuel..so unless u have a programmable ecu sounds like 100 isn;t worth it

I know this is a question on EF performance, but, I had a BP card from my wife's work which allowed her (ME) to fuel our cars with whatever we chose. I put premium in my EA and her Hyundai because we were not paying for it for the last 3 months!
Noticable change: NIL!
I assume this is because neither car is modified (Except, very slightly, for mine, with extractors only) So IMO for our basic standard vehicles, Premium is a waste of money.
For all you people with highly modified engines who need to extract the last amount of HP? Well go for it. I believe unless you have at least:
CAI
Cam
Extractors & exhaust

Then you will be wasting your money!

I find the best fuel efficiency is the higher octane fuel. I noticed it lasted longer. Tried the norm a few months back. It went through the car like a mulcher.

Don't go knocking the Optimax, my car runs like crap and pings on anything other than optimax or United's Boost 98.

95 is pretty sweet for stock ecu...i dont think its worth the premuim to put in 98+ octane unless u have done some serious engine mods!!
