Hey guys, recently i have installed an xr6 head to my 300,000km old engine. Simple enough, but 2 days later starts blowing blue oil smoke when cold, so i went to the mechanic and he said hopefully valve stem seals. I had those fixed on wednesday, but its still doing it. So it leaves one thing it could be. The piston rings.
It seems that e-series cars and me are just not meant to be... I need some advice on what to do, 1. Complete auto v8 conversion for about $1200 2. Au engine conversion using my xr head and rocker gear/cam $cost unknown 3. Save up and buy a new short motor for about $1500-$1700 I just dont know what to do, after having the ea die on me, and now this car, im about to lose the plot i think :( any suggestions?? cheers scott

Hey Scott bad luck there mate. I'd say so the AU conversion and put your XR head and cam gear on it. You could just use MPFI to make the conversion easier. Theres a few members on here who would be willing to give you a hand I'm sure.
A V8 conversion would be nice but I'm sure theres a lot more stuffing around.

You can mess around and not run the serpentine conversion but you may as well IMO.
Could put a BA motor in there as well. That would be sweet. I think Sundeep knows all the ins and outs with a V8 conversion, he helped a guy I know get his running. That is what I would be doing. You can beat that sound for a daily driver IMO. |

Bad luck Scotty. I reckon go the AU engine. If you do that, at least you'll be able to keep your manual too.

AU motor should come with serp scotty get the bloddy head reco'd. that should do the trick! AU motor from FTG Auto Salvage I think are $600 - $800. Dont quote me on price though. Talk to Pat pretty sure he did his AU Engine conversion for a $1000. I think he is banned on here at the moment though?

yep but my motor is a far bit more then a 2k rebuild .. my block , rods , head and inlet manifold is over 2k by it self.
if the rest of your car is up to it I will get you a 14.7 to a 15.4 qtr I have built another motor running in a EB in melb that does 15.3 with crow cam 3.23ss diff manual and cat back .. thats all as your at wade im sure you would be able to "tweak" a better cam for your self to use.. |

Know how you feel.
Did a head gasket for Rips' Mum's car the other day and some git who was helping decided to muck (I wanna say so bad muck doesn't have the same affect but pretend I said there ok) with the tensioner and broke it. Long story short the motor was put back together and promptly welded the dizzy shaft after about 10 minutes. Ordered a new motor the next day ($500 EL job, delivered to the door from Ozwreck). It didn't look too spectacular when it arrived but 3 good people working on it, good tools/air tools and 9 hours saw it all fitted (dual fuel too!) and running well first turn of the key. Borrowed a crane off Dan too, so that saved about $50. Dansedgli for unban. Soooo yeah. Don't waste your time just jam in a ED Tickford 4L FTW. Engine changes when you install the correct motor for the car are way less around. Sundeep |

If you're going the rebuild route, I'd be giving Trick_XD a yell. He knows his stuff (just look at his times) and is a great guy. If not going rebuild, I'd be thinking AU conversion.

Bundoora Auto wreckers will have AU motors for $500 including all accessories. Just tell em a few of your mates with earlier model cars had picked them up for that price before.. They'll look after ya. It's easy to install.. Once you have the XH tensioner ($80 from bursons) and an EF/EL A/C compressor, the rest is easy.
Good luck.

It comes with all accessories, but you would need a XH tensioner and EF/EL A/C or pulley thing from ford like trick xd said.. thats if you wanna keep your ea-ed style manifold. Or you can go BBM, and install an EL ECU, etc.

you don't need to run a Air-Compressor now there is a off the shelf part that you can buy from ford for 55$ and it will bolt where your Air-Con goes and its just a idler pulley .

Any idea if they have these for BA motors as well? A rebuilt stocker would be more reliable that an AU conversion IMO. I dont know any AU's that are low km's any more. Even an early BA motor would start to have high kms. If you get the engine rebuilt then you shouldnt have to worry about it for another 300,000kms. Just get the short motor done and it shouldnt cost too much. It will cost more than an AU conversion but "should" last longer than a wreckers special engine that you dont know the history of. It would be less stuffing around and will be legal unlike a BA conversion and you wont be cursed with pushrods. Those EFI windsors are the ugliest motors ever, I wouldnt want one of them in my engine bay. |

I just know they are there for E-series as I have spun 3 Air- Con bearings over the last 18 mths .... So I was going to make something for my motor ... and then ford told me there is a part already made as they have found that the Air-Con pumps are not all that good when you over Rev your motor or stay at mid to high revs for long times..
