Default Bonnet Scoops on NON-V8's

Hey all,

whats the go with putting bonnet scoops on non-v8's?

do most people think they are ****/wana bee? or are they acceptable on certain 6's?

i love the look of the scoops...in particular i like yours LOTUS as seen in your build thread

ohh i foregot to mention....i want a WORKING scoop...after all they are to force air under the bonnet

so what do people think?
scoops are ok to have on 6's? or do they stay only for 8's?

It really depends if they're functional. For example efgiar has a bonnet scoop on a 6 cylinder, but he's got a top mounted pod filter under it. I like it for this reason. On the other hand, if people put scoops on just for the fun of it, I don't like them as much.

If it's functional, than yes, but most of the time a scoop on a 6 serves no purpose. IMO

Unless the air intake opening is near the scoop opening all it does is address issue of heating and allowing air to come in from the top of the bonnet. The EB GT scoop and vents were designed to remove the hot air from the engine bay. I will be putting the EB GT bonnet scoop setup on mine in the near future to just mainly to reduce high under bonnet temps over summer.

All i can say is that as long as the scoop/vents are funtional and not just stuck on, i say go for it

The scoop on the EB is not functional at the moment, but eventually will be. Does anyone know if the mesh on the EB GT scoop is seperate and if they are can you still get them.

yes i want it functional.

purpose for me = remove heat from engine bay so turbo doesnt have to work in huge temps.

yeah i was looking at the EB GT scoops as my second choice.

theres so many choices...however vic roads have very tough regs when it comes to scoops....the GT is ok for 2 reasons.....very small as in height and all contact points are rounded

hmmmm which way to go

For heat extraction, how about a set of Sierra Cosworth style vents? They can look quite good on an EA-ED and will certainly do the job.

hmm those sierra's dont look bad at all. thanks dezza.

SSV have them ($165 unprimed....pick myself up off the floor)
id go with the mesh inserts to give that bit of class.

im guessing forwards facing = air box intake backwards facing = heat extraction

hmmmmmmm...what to choose......3 ideas now.....bonnet scoop OR gt scoop OR vents

correct me if IM wrong but isnt it considered illeagle to cut your parcel shelf for 6x9's and run turbos, and having your car too low, and have wheels to big, and having a chip in the windscreen of your car, and having worn tyres, and having your car unroadworthy... gee... sounds similar??

Need to remember there are one or two legalities involved with these things...
In addition to local road registration laws you must also comply with relevant ADR's
-Forward facing bofywork (ie bonnet openings, scoop openings) must have no sharp / protruding edges....
- In the event of component failure the opening must be constructed so as to prevent fluid loss from contact with windscreen. (This is the hard one.)
- Closed air intake design for EFI cars must be of at least 130% of engine displacement volume. This allows for expansion capacity in case of engine backfire. This is measured as if you were to place a plastic bag over the air filter, and is the volume down as far as the throttle body butterfly(s). This(along with the next) clause are the ones that necessitate the use of an airbox for pod installs.
- Intake construction must comply with relevant "drive-by" noise limits. That distinctive intake growl 'may' not meet these standards, and fitting inside an open scoop may actually amplify the noise level.
- Filter assemblies must be physically mounted in such a way that movement is restricted. ie screwed / hoseclamped (or otherwise tied) to a hunk o metal / bodywork in some form or another.

There's a lot of time and energy put into these things, that both look, and function great, but fall foul of the relevant laws / legislations.

hmm efgiar your scoop looks awsom.

however due to the turbo my intake will now be on drivers side so the scoop wont be as affective as yours efgiar....maybe a mix of vents (directly over turbo pod and the other side directly over intake piping)....and a small scoop to reduce overall bonnet temp.

hmmm....and wulos....ive read vic roads PDF on scoops and you are correct....all the good looking/practical scoops are borderline if not illegal :(
without things like being boxed in and rounded corners & no bigger than perfect vision 11m in front of car...etc

scoop might have to stay on back burner for a while.....and maybe go with ea_silver_ghia's idea of the sierra vents

the turbo pod filter would be better in a box behind the front bar, in the corner. if i go turbo i will still utilize the scoop still and will have to mount the turbo a different way to do so. but i think mine is just legal regarding vision, just need to sort out the box, the police wouldnt be that far into it that they are going to go u need 130% of the engine capacity which sounds to me like it should be about 5.2 litres up to the butterfly in the tb. which doesnt sound that hard to do. after all the police measure 100mm with no weight, rather then 100mm with a full load of people and fuel.

legal or not, functional or otherwise, NOTHING is better cop bait than a bonnet scoop! trust me i know, personaly id rather giv them no excuses to take a second look at my ride, and particualy not draw attention to the bonnet and what mite be under it lol but thats just me

hehe yeah 3.9from_hell i was thinking the same thing....but at the same time i want the car to look smick and function best it can.
im still hoping to go legit with the turbo...just not straight away

so yeah theres another reason why scoop might stay on the back burner...hehe

after 18 mths I still don't have a scoop on my car.
Nope I don't get pulled over.
I have thought of a Hilux scoop and a old scoop from the XW/XYs.

They look the part and its good to see they're functional.

Just out of curiosity, what are the laws regarding legallities?
I know 6/71's and Bug catchers are deemed illegal as protruding sharp objects are a hazard among other reasons, Do scoops have to have rounded edges and have maximum widths and heights?

And does obstruction of view come into it? Just sourcing a bit of info when i get my blower on.

In the first pic thats how I have it when I race ( I tilt it back so more air cleaner sticks out )

How it sits in the 2nd pic is how it is all the time ... Yes even in the wet I drive it and I don't have a problem as yet ... and I live in a wet and windy place......

geez, ummm... i dont know, looks to me scoops are used for cold air intakes... gee i dont think you can see the motor and tell if its injected from the outside of the car.. lets inject a ex-carbi cortina, put a scoop on it, close the bonnet, would it look any different compared to a carb'ed corti? NO so how does it look crap on an injected car
