I'm planning on maybe getting a bigger better air box and intake anyway. just keen to know what the extra bigger bits do? am I making sense?

ok
The metal thingies are the inlet manifold. The EF, EL and AU use what is called a BroadBand manifold (BBM for short). Inside the manifold are 6 butterflies that switch the direction the inlet charge can flow at a set RPM (3800 rpm if you use a factory ECU). The butterflies redirect the inlet charge to take a short or longer route to the cylinder head. The jury is out on the benifits or upgading, some have had good results others not too sure. I personally have found the car is better mid range, but again I think you have to look at the whole package.. Do a search and you'll find a few threads on the conversion... Here is one i found really quickly http://www.fordforums.com.au/showthr...light=manifold
