Default EL Mods

I'm about to be getting my hands on an EL GLi, and I was wondering what some general mods are that can give me a bit more street cred with it. I want to keep it n/a...however a turbo might be a later addition. Is there much more you can do to the 250 motors than intake/exhaust? Also has anyone else had a problem with a waterhose blowing around the back of the engine that you need to break the gearbox coupling to get at? I know of a couple of people who have had it happen, one in an EF and the person i'm getting my EL from.

Cheers,
Jais

Welcome to the Forums mate! Ive got a EL GLi also, and ive just lately put a full exhaust system on her. thats a good cheap (under $1K) mod to gain a tougher note as well as some more power. Lower the Falcon on Superlows and get the window tinted. Those 3 mods will set you back no more than $2K and will make the car look and sound sweet from the outside.

Hope ive been of some help.

Enjoy your times on FF

Cheers Paul

EL's don't have 250's, they have a 4.0 OHC 6.
which makes cam changes an easy task.
the common go fast mods are intake, exhaust and cam, to go a bit further a custom tunable chip is a good addition.

Awesome, cheers guys. Much obliged. I've read in an edition of SM that you can fit a fairmont ghia diff to a GLi and that gives it some more go aswell...Anyone hear anything similar?

you must be talking about, going from a 3.08 to a 3.45 lsd, this would give it much better accleration.
it is something i plan to do in the near future.
just gotta find a 3.45lsd

15" steelies. 4.11's, shift kit, hi-stall. It's all about the acceleration

I could be alone in my thinking but I wouldn't bother spending $600+ on a secondhand 3.45 LSD - for just a bit extra you could get fully reconditioned parts installed from a diff specialist.

The only thing I can add is that clear indicators (including EF rear lights) and colour coded side mouldings get rid of the 'base model' look and will compliment other mods like lowering.

You;re better off spending that extra $150-250 on a complete rebuilt diff.

Any ideas where I can get my hands on some aftermarket indicators? I've seen them everywhere on AU's but I can't find anywhere that stocks them for EL!

There was a guy on the forums selling direct replacements for EL side indicators (someone should remember his name?). The other option is finding NL Fairlane side mouldings which include clear indicators.

You can get your bits and pieces together for your diff a commadore l.s.d. will fit from any of there borg warner ( last VL - VR ) as there is a heap of the dunnydoors at the wreckers you should be able to get a diff cheap$80?? then if you want a heap of Acceleration find a diff from a skyline or a pintara they are 3.77 , 4.10 , 4.11 , 4.39? anyway then take it to a shop and get them to rebuild it for you and there price should be about 400 -500

What i did was Go to wreckers and get

Vn calais diff ( for the L.S.D.) $70
Pintara wagon ( for the 4.11 Center) $free i had to take it out

Then as i have not had a heap of experience in diffs and did not want to stuff it
I took it to the oldest Mechanic here in town to get him to put new bearings
and shim it for me ( 400 ) then took it , refitted it , filled with oil , took it genle for about 200km ... Then gave it a caining and love the power on takeoff 1 thing is ... More power on take off = more money on tyres

Clear indicators like this?

RATXR8 (or similar) was selling them on the forums, but no one has heard from him in a while :( Damn shame, they look great!

Enjoy the car mate, great cars.
For more poke, I would suggest a manual conversion. Mines a factory manual and far out does it go compared to my work car, EF auto.

Thanks for all the help guys and digging this one up is a bit of a blast from the past. I never ended up getting that EL GLi and instead I found an EF Fairmont in fairly good condition. I've fitted most of my audio gear into it, I'm just waiting on a mate to finish off my boot install.

Here's a pic of it when I brought it home, early Feb:

And as it stands today:

I've been in touch with RATXR8 and my clear repeaters should be here soon so that will fix that up. Extractors might go on soon too, and is still in need of panelbeating/respray.

Longterm plans = 18" rims and injected, lightly worked 351C + toploader

Thanks mate. It has been a while haha, and the site seems a hell of a lot bigger than it did when I 1st came on!! I've been mainly on state-based forums and FordMods because they seem simpler to use for the simpler-minded :P

I'm trying to decide what extractors to put on as I'll soon have the cash saved. I want some that will increase low-mid rpm performance so I've been told Lukey are the go because of longer, slightly thinner runners. Any suggestions? :

Cheers

Yeah they're just cornering lamps from an NL. I haven't bothered to wire them up to relays on either side though, too much screwing around. They're just run off a relay that goes to a switch inside, and also the highbeam wire.

Ratko's email is ratxr8@hotty.com but I have no idea when his next batch will be in. At this stage it's a limit of 1 set each, too.
