I have an ED 4.0 litre Falcon Futura and I would be interested in fitting the turbo kit listed below from Snort Performance in Albury. I read the article on turbo charging Ford sixes in the Street machine magazine. I didn't realise how much potential these motors have. I will be joining a local car club and compete in some drag racing events, I would like around 6 pounds of boost.
I just have a couple of questions to ask so if anyone could help that would be great. Does anyone in have experience fitting a turbo to a ford 4 litre 6? What sort of testing would be required to ensure the engine is in good condition to have a turbo fitted? Is a engineers certificate required in NSW, where do I get these from? There was also mentioned in the Street Machine article some additional issues/parts that may be required like, good fuel supply, engine oil breathing system, aftermarket catch can. What if any of these components would be required? The first step will be to move the battery to the boot and install one of those 'interceptor' shift kits on the auto to improve shift especially under boost. Just do a basic compression test to check whether the engine is healthy for a turbo setup. As long as it has good compression in all cylinders it should be fine. You don't need an engineers cert as such to have a turbo on your 4lt....but if you get pulled over by the cops they will send you to get one I'm tipping ;)
Yes you will also need a good fuel supply, probably upgraded pump maybe a rising rate reg depending on your setup. If your going all out and changing injectors and stuff then you will probably need to get some form of aftermarket engine management too. This is where things start getting pricy. A catch can isn't essential but a lot of people use them.....plus they look cool for about 90 bux ;) |

a better fuel pump will be supplied with the turbo kit, so that's covered. at 6psi there should be no need to change injectors but of course, more boost will require it, size 36lb/hour rated should work well. engine management i'm unsure on, as i understand it std ford ecu unit cannot read boost pressure so i might have to get me one of these at around $1000, probably a wolf 3d which will directly interface with the ford tfi ignition. one thing i'm unsure of is the 'catch can' what is it and what does it do? |

ebfalcs, power output at rear wheel should be around 180kw up from 90kw. quarter times i'm unsure of but i do know of a stock 4 litre ea falcon running a factory xr6 turbo, this car debuted with some mid 10 sec ets.
