I don't mean to sound like a smartarse, but wouldn't starting it give you a fair idea?

well that,s just it...I have started it and is sounding wrong (a catch slap type of noise) but it sounds in the top end....I have removed the driver's side head (v8), checked lifters, removed gearbox, bellhousing, starter motor....when turned by hand nothing is catching...No bores have scoring (thought broken ring)

Engine recently rebuilt by myself..First full rebuilt as 302c then got crank etc and converted to 351c...This is the first time I have undertaken a full engine rebuid so I was expecting some teething problems.

I just would have thought that with a bent crank that when turning it by hand it would have gotten noticably harder to turn in certain positions?

thanks for suggestions it turned out to be a dodgy valve guide install. All but 1 valve stem (exhaust) had been fully removed. The at fault one had merely been fitted with and insert of some kind. This insert then proceeded to seize up on the valve stem causing it to catch a little then release violently..thus a slap sound....Needless to say the old valve guide was nothingbut a jagged mess. It just disgusts me how they could do all the others completely then shortcut so badly....Must have been getting near to knock off time for the day. :(
