I have bought a manifold from BOOSTDEF so the 3540 and tial gate will be going on soon. My intercooler is getting replaced this weekend as well.
Do you guys think I should keep the stock turbo setup so I can return it back to original down the track or should I sell it? It kinda feels weird getting rid of it when its all complianced. Then again, I want to go fast and wont be returning it back to stock for long. It would be just as easy running a stock EA motor if I get EPA'd or defected. Im not even 100% sure the turbo is standard as it stands now. Its supposed to be a T3 but has a T04 front housing. Its a high flow I suspect. It would include, the turbo, manifold, dump pipe, intercooler piping, intercooler and wastegate setup. Add a fuel pressure reg and your on your way to boosted E series goodness. Any ideas what I could get for it all or opinions on what I should do?

Yeh i reckon keep it.. It would be very hard (Near impossible) to get those parts. And the AIT could be worth something in quite a few years in its off the floor condition??
Just a thought mate.

You dont think a pristine condition factory EA turbo will be worth much in 10-15 years?

Keep it, when u wanna sell the car it will only go up in price if it's in immaculate original cond. Cars like that don't depreciate as time goes on less of them are around so the price goes up as if you wanna buy one ul have some serious competition that'll just push the price up!

The parts by themselves have no real siginificance as theres a fair bit of turbo hardware out there for e-series these days at good prices, so price wise you wouldnt get much at all for them.
But more importantly the car would totally lose its appeal and originality which may not bother you now, but for the price you'd get for them i would be keeping them stored away somewhere. |

Dan are you crazy! Definately keep it. As an example, its like someone having a HO and taking the engine out to fit something hotter. Fair enough, but you wouldn't sell it!
Maybe a bit OTT, ut you get my drift. The car was a bargin to begin with, so your not exactly losing out. Also, as others have said, keeping it original is very important! In car shows, Im more impressed by a clean original car than something thats modded beyond recongition.

Dan,
I reckon keep it aswell.. But if you looking at selling i would be willing to make an offer on everything except the turbo.. Keep the turbo as a spare just incase the other one dies on you.. Cheers, Nik

Ive done a bit more thinking about this. I dont think the car is going to be worth anything in all original condition later on anyway. I did only pay $4K for it. XR6T's will be worth $10K in 5 years. I know which one I'd rather buy.
There is a lot of aspects of the car that I am not happy with because it definately isnt showroom quality. The inside feels like its been ripped apart a few times and put back in with only half the bolts. :( If I get defected its going to be easier to return the motor to NA to clear it. I had enough trouble getting a legit RWC for it before. I reckon I could get a pretty decent start on a C9 conversion if I sold it as well. ;)

Sheeesh man... You buy and sell stuff change things and never seem to finish anything "as a keeper", must be costing you heaps ??...If it has plates for turbo? Then a turbo it can have...How are they going to know it's different?? Unless modified way different...
I'd keep the std stuff..

The GT3540, wastegate and fuel system is all left over from the torana. I have come out about even, selling the AU offset the money wasted on the torana.

I'd still say keep it otherwise your back to square one (in terms of legality of turbo gear) and could have just got a nice ED Ghia or even EF/EL and turbo'd that instead for the price of the EA.
But then again you might be able to talk yourself out of a few defects with a compliance plate, but if EPA'd would have to go stock. |

Nah, the driveline and suspension in the EA made the price worthwhile. Tremec box FTW.
Im thinking the compliance plate would help a lot when my car gets inspected. Im going to remove all the casting numbers from the new turbo. If I get defected its going to be easier to convert it back to NA to get a RWC than it will be to swap everything over again.

How can that be? What the point of having a "turbo" compliance plate if its not even recognised. Go through the hastle of getting your "RWC guy" to accept that its a factory turbo and just keep going back whenever you need to. At the end of the day if you get defected and they refuse to take it off then the cops/EPA will be contravening ADR legislation and youve got a court win there. |

Ah ok well that makes sense then, it seems its hard enough to get info on what these cars actually were complianced with so im sure cops/rwc places would know no better when looking under the hood.
Maybe try keep it factory looking, black intercooler pipes for example rather than massive shiny piping and manifold, would probably help a lot. |
