Well here is another E-series to add to the accident list. The short version of what happened - The back end kicked out on me @ 100kph in the wet and I veered into a Kenworth truck that was beside me, ending up sideways on the Princess Fwy in a **** my pants situation.
Now the long version - Ok, by now everyone's probably thinking "yeah he must have been caning it", but that's what freaked me out, I wasn't. I was coming back from Geelong about 9pm just going past the Point Cook section of the Fwy, it was ****ing with rain but I was on a perfectly straight bit of the road cruising at 100 and for a few seconds it felt like the car lost drive. When I looked at the tacho it was around 3000rpm and literally half a second after that the back end swung out to the left and I started heading towards the Kenworth beside me. It was a weird feeling cause I thought, "yeah no problem, a bit of over-steer - I can fix that" but then I hit the truck on his front left bumper bar and there was a lot of swearing and thinking "this could go bad real quick". All I could think of was that I was gonna fly back into the middle of the Fwy and get cleaned up by a ton of cars doing 100. Anyway, after that I can't remember exactly what I did I was just trying to keep the car straight, luckily the truck kept in a straight line and I didn't hit his trailer, cause he went past and I ended up sideways across the two inside lanes. I was also lucky that the car was still running, otherwise I would have been a sitting duck. I got it to the center emergency lane and off the freeway. Now I've been trying to figure out what happened with the car exactly. I don't know whether it aqua-planed (my rear tyres are shagged so it wouldn't be hard), or else something happened with the transmission. It's been playing up lately and doesn't have 3rd gear plus it does all kinds of other weird stuff. Anyway here's a pic of the damage, I consider myself pretty lucky to get out of it so lightly! The car will need a new bonnet, guard, bar, rad support and lower sill. I'm getting a quote tonight and I'm in two minds wether to get it fixed or part it out. I put a lot of effort into re-spraying it and I don't know if I can be bothered spraying the front end again....I'm kind of over it at the moment. |

You're kidding me!
After all that effort respraying the sucker. Really sorry to see this Doug, but thankful that it didn't get any worse. From the way you describe it, it could've been real bad. That really does suck :(

Thanks guys I've been thinking about what to do all night, I don't mind that the car is stacked it's just the fact that now I have to spend more weekends rubbing back and painting again : To be honest I can't be stuffed, but I will cause the rest of the car is mint and I've got a lot of go-fast bits sitting round waiting to go on. I might get full comp now though, so if it ever happens again I don't have to stuff around painting ****.
Rmyers - the trans lines are fine mate, I just noticed earlier on Sunday that the trans lost drive for a bit going to the video shop then it would make a weird noise (kinda like a dog yelping) when it engaged the gear. Dunno what's going on with it. |

i'm guessing from your initial description that it lost drive to the wheels, then as it re-engaged, since your foot was still on the throttle, it must have jolted and kicked the back end out. I remember you mentioning a while ago that the transmission was a bit dodgy. Time for a rebuilt i think mate!

if you squinch and look at the "C" shape of the damage and add the number plate letters i think it gives a dam good description of what's happened.

Not good, with poor condition tyres at 100km/h you may have hit an oily patch in the road that came up as a result of the rain and that could have easily sent you sidewyas in the wet.

DAMN you're very lucky not to get really cleaned up Doug, big shame about the car though :( Sounds like the rear end aqua-planed, I've had similar things happen at those speeds with bald tires in the rain, and it's not fun at all.

Shitty news Doug. It'd be a shame to part it out so soon.
This is why I never take the risk with crappy tyres or anything else that holds the car to the road. Good luck with it.

Bugger. Good you got out OK but shame about the damage. It was a tidy looking car, so I'd say it would be worth fixing

Glad to see your ok man. It can be fixed. Sucks that it happened after the respray though but still better to hurt the car than hurt yourself.
