Default Lighten Flywheel???

What's the GO with Lighten ur Flywheel!!
Where abouts can you get them done.... ANYONE know a place??..
Has anyone got there Flywheel machined and drilled out to reduce some Kgs!

I have actually heard that a light flywheel on e-series will make the car run worse. I am sure somone else can explain better, but that stopped me from getting a lighter flywheel, and for the price you will pay on it; the rwkws gain (IF ANY) will be 3/5ths of *** all realy...

I'd expect a minimal gain on a road car with some possible detrmimental effects by virtue of the rpm road cars run at.

The flywheel is there to basically send energy back at low rpm - partcularly at idle. at high rpm all it does is soak up energy - another component to spin up.

On Sprintcars and Speedcars there is no flywheel but they don't need to idle and run at an almost constant high rpm. There's only a "dog clutch" and you need to push start them.

If you take anything out of a flywheel to reduce the weight will you'd take it out close to the centre where there is less hoop stress. while the weight will go down that will have little effect on the rotational inertia so it really won't make much of a difference.

My flywheel has been lightened, nothing extreme but a fair bit has been machined off of it. It revs higher and easier, no increase or decrease in power or torque that I can really notice though.

You can pretty much get it done anywhere that does brakes and clutches, I normally use BGT brakes and clutch in dandenong. Sorry I don't have their number on me at the moment... If you use them tell them Alex from Coffey's Noble Park sent you.

As Bill R said, don't expect a huge difference.

My flywheel was pulled out last week (due to the clutch sh*tting itself), and it was discovered that it was effectively useless (heat cracks and a big groove all the way through it that wouldn't have been able to be machined out). New ones from Ford are about $900, so I looked around, and found a billet aftermarket one for about $500 that is half the weight. So basically, if you are getting it lightened, it might not even be worth chopping down the stock one, but looking at a brand new lighter one. It should be in today and I will collect my car tonight. I'll let you know how it goes.

Doesn't OED666 have an XR6T flywheel (read: much lighter than std E-series flywheel) in his 13.8 second ED?

Usually it will rev up quicker but you will loose torque. Depends on how light you go

Yep, i do. The EA one i had was 12kg's, the BA Mk1 Turbo is 7.5kg's. Its much harder to pick a consistant rpm to change at now, the tacho swings way too quickly. before i know it, its hitting the 6000rpm limiter.

I have a AU XR8 clutch kit (one of Mal Woods' Clutches).

3 times more clamping force than the Daikin one i had, and the same pedal effort. thats how i can launch at 4000rpm.

the BA Mk1 flywheel is an Auto flexplate with the flywheel part bolted. thats why its much lighter. not to be confused with the Mk2 flywheel for the 6 speed which is 15kg's.






Modifications also need to be made to the gearbox and bellhousing for the clutch fork.

Hmmmmm... I wonder if there are any differences with flexplates available for BTR autos then? Say, the auto AU T3s may have had a lightened flexplate?

i also have a pic at work at the difference in the clutch size. it may be hard to find, but the turbo flywheel is definitly worth it. you will also need a new clutch...
