hey guys im currently building a motor for my car, au block with a ef/el xr head, im running an acl race kit thru the motor with 20thou oversized pistons, xr6t rods and the usual port/polish to the head. i am going to stay manual but was thinking of putting in a t56 instead of a t5. does anyone know if this is a bolt up affair or will a custom bellhousing need to be used. is there a t56 for the 6 cyl AU's? im using an au block so it would be a nice match and all the bolts will line up :P any more information would be great thanks

i am sure all the gear ratios are different as they are a close ratio box. no big gap between 2nd and 3rd... i have a T5Z...
and yes they are stronger.

this is why I say get a T5Z, when I blow my T5 this is what I will be going for, with a XR6T Flywheel and a big clutch. |

I priced the VZ HSV T56 box (M112) just for a laugh - holden want 9k for a brand newie...these boxes are farken expensive. They are very very strong though. So I sold the VZ one to some guy (luckily managed to re-sell for 2k so I didn't loose any money) and still have the bellhousing if anyone wants it... I then bought an XR6T box with flywheel and clutch, which cost me 3500 bucks (which is probably stuffed because I always get ripped off because I believe what people tell me) but I didn't get to fit it before stoving my car into a solid object. I know the bellhousing fits (bottom bolts dont line up with two E-series brackets, but probably would line up with AU ones) I'm not sure which spigot bearing to use or even if they are different, I haven't compared the size of the input shafts yet. From memory the T56 is 85cm from bellhousing to shifter pivot (on an XR6T box, holden ones are even further back) and the T5 is only 70cm, so the shifter will come up VERY close to the center console lid in 2nd 4th and 6th gears - the factory shifter is angled back though, so a custom/straight/short/angled forewards/whatever one may be needed, I dunno yet. The T56 has a hydraulic clutch, so you would have to work something out there too, another thing I'm going to have to figure out when I get a car thats worth putting it into. And it has no speedo sender output because BAs use a wheel speed sensor instead, so something will have to be worked out to make the speedo work... |

Josh,
My T56 cost me just over $8k. However mine is to suit my application. If you can get them for aroung $1k, let me know as I'm after another. Speak to Pyro as I'm sure he has a T56 behind his turbo 6.

I was thinking 309RWKW and a T5Z... WOW!!! Quote from site... Owner : Aaron "Pryoay" Car : 1997 EL XR6 Turbo with 309 rwkw. “It was clear that with over 300kw at the rear wheels the standard gearbox wasn’t going to be up to the task. Mal Wood supplied me with a T5 “Z” spec box and it has performed the task terrifically”. I would recommend Mal Wood to any interstate person thinking about ordering a Tremec and having it fitted locally themselves. Thanks, i wasnt too sure if he had changed his gearbox.

Yeah $8k sounds about right if you are buying locally, they are a USD $2k box in the states but you have to remember you need the other bits and pieces as well as freight. For memory it also has 3 shifter locations that can be used so you can fit most applications. |

just one thing with a T5Z, it has a tall first gear, so unless you have 3.9's or 4.11's it will be a little slow off the line.
a standard T5 with 3.9's can mathematically take off faster than a T5Z with 4.11's...
