Default Car-jacking

Note sent from the NRMA. Be aware of new car-jacking scheme.
You walk across the car park, unlock your car and get inside. Then you start the engine and shift into REVERSE, and you look into the rear-view mirror to back out of your parking space and you notice a large piece of paper stuck to the middle of the rear window. So, you shift the gear stick back into PARK, unlock your doors and jump out of your car to remove that paper (or whatever it is) that is obstructing your view. When you reach the back of your car, that is when the car-jackers appear out of nowhere, jump into your car and take off!! Your engine was running, you would have left your purse in the car and they practically mow you down as they speed off in your car.
BE AWARE OF THIS NEW SCHEME THAT IS NOW BEING USED IN SYDNEY AND COULD SPREAD ACROSS AUSTRALIA.

This is definately one of those chain things that gets sent around the office.

A smart carjacker would get a scantily clad, hot chick to distract male drivers. Once the chick has started talking to the joe all the actual carjacker needs to do is jump out of the bushes and accuse him of trying to steal his girlfriend, beat him on the head and finally steal his pride and joy. I mean COME ON, if some hot chick approaches you AND she wants to talk to you, you're going to talk to her aren't you? Right?

The moral: If its too good to be true, it probably is.

Same goes for ATM's at shopping centre carparks after hours. Probably even worse... half way through a transaction, someone getting in your car... do you chase them and leave your transaction half processed?? Do you get your card out of the machine and watch them drive off??

Was it really from NRMA??
I highly doubt it was. In fact I would put money on the fact that it did not come from NRMA.

I've seen this at the post office too. A sheila left her car running while she posted a letter, but the stupid thing is the car was out of her sight for a minute and the car was parked on the side of the road. wanted to move the car around the corner just to prove a point!

But the story is old, and does the rounds ont he email now and then

One time I saw an old woman pull up beside a parked car, still on the road. She didn't even bother to look for a park. She got out, left her car running, left her door open and went into the supermarket. I couldn't believe my eyes.

That warning was second hand. Sent to me by a friend.
It would not be easy to use that method because the thief would have to wait near the car and have some idea when the owner would return.
Remember there were cars taken when the drivers left the keys in the car at the petrol pump and went to the office to pay. Would expect it would only happen once at any station.
The car parks with boom gates should be safe if the driver makes sure they keep the ticket in their pocket. Cars cannot be taken out without it.
