Default Overheating / Too cold

Ive had a wierd issue with my old ladys's EA Ghia. (Series 1)

When we got it, the car ran REALLY cold. This was due to the previous owner drilling 4 holes into the thermostat. Im not sure why 4 but im sure they had a reason :yeees:

I replaced it with a CPC thermostat and found the temp was errattic and the car tended to get quite hot with it. 3/4 way and creeping over driving time of 20mins

I today replaced it with another thermostat which worked perfectly in my car with a good temp range but in her car caused it to again run cold. Barely goes near the normal area.

Anythoughts? Seems that if I fit a decent thermostat it runs cold or a cheap one it runs hot.

I am not sure about the non au i6 cars. The AU has a special thermostat..i think its called dual stage .This allows the car to run perfectly. I replaced it with one from the auto shop and my car was always cool idled rough because the ecu ran rich.So this may be the same prob

Drill a 2mm hole into the side of the thermostat, that stops irridicate temp variations from occuring. All E-series and AU Falcons require this mod.

Oh yeah and make sure the thermostat you buy is the right temperature, it should be 92C from memory.

I've also heard the best theromstat for the E series is the genuine one, and they aren't that dear.

Yep aftermarket is not worth bothering with. New genuine is dual stage and needs no mods to work properly.

I just went and bought a genuine thermostat, only $14.50 or so plus $2 for the gasket, so not the most expensive thing in the world. Cheaper than the $25 repco one that was in my car... Doesn't seem to have fixed the temperature fluctuating problem I have though... :(

Drill a 2mm hole in the side of it... seriously this is the ONLY way to fix the fluctuating temp problem.

You mean all aftermarket thermostats need this mod.

Mick, just buy a genuine one. Never had an issue with them. Besides the 6 week old one that siezed shut, but we won't go there.

I'm still having the fluctuation problem with a genuine thermostat. Is it worth taking it back and trying another one?

One of my genuine ones killed a headgasket, since i'd replaced a fairly old thermostat I just assumed the fluctuations were supposed to happen (since it was genuine and all)....

replaced the thermostat when i did the headgasket, and my fluctuations went away...

Temp Fluctuations may settle down after a while too... One of mine was fluctuating quite bad but after a couple weeks driving it settled down.

Buubox drill a 2mm hole in the side and end all the arguments. This WILL fix your problem, of that I am 100% sure. You will then be able to tell the naysayers where to go!

Even Ford drilled holes into the AU Falcon thermostats on the first service. It stops temp fluctuations by allowing some hot water to reach the other side of the thermostat allowing the thermostat to not become victim of late opening due to the thermostat acting like a heatsink(hot water one side, cold water other side = thermostat that won't open until water is boiling hot).

Also the small hole allows some water through meaning the water on the radiator side is allowed to heat up a little before the first thermostat opening. NONE of the thermostats can do this if they are completely blocked units. Instead they open up suddenly and push freezing cold water into your hot engine block and head, which can cause serious damage. Ford genuine thermostats, aftermarket thermostats, cheapie thermostats, it doesn't matter... for the E-Series to AU cars all require this mod.

ea hooligan

what you have to remember on the ea they have a flow by system that actually do what you are saying

so you shouldnt have to drill anything in them

i was going to try it myself and my mechanic told me to get of the grass as they do it on an original thermostat

You will find that the genuine thermostats already have a small hole drilled through them, although it's very tiny (about one mm from memory). Mine fluctuates a bit and so does my friend's EA (also new genuine), but I am guessing mine might be something to do with the aftermarket water pump :S I might drill the hole out a mm or so and see if that helps.

I always drill one 3mm hole in mine, someone told me to do that years ago. Never had any issues with fluctuactions in any of my cars. It just allows a tiny amount of water through as was said above, to avoid cold one side hot the other.

More of a problem for the E series cars is the silt buildup problem in the radiators, had issues with the ED and mother's EF, clean out the radiator no more problem.

Hi There,

First post.

I bought a 94 XG ute on the weekend, and the temp won't move off the cold mark. So I'm picking up a genuine thermostat this arvo.

Will I need to drill a hole for a XG, or only E-series and AU's??????

Cheers,
Jase

Well I had a new radiator in my EL. My mechanic who I have been a customer of for over 10 years now, reckons he puts 180deg thermos in ALL E's & AUs, he reckons that the factory 195 is way too hot. But why would FORD have put 195's in from the factory, they must have had a reason, & also if you look up a thermo chart the FORDS run the hottest, no other vehicle uses a 195 thermo.!

Putting colder thermostats in E-series will make them run rich, because they aren't at operating temp, so the ECU adjusts.
