Default Bearing Noise, but its NOT the bearing...

Awful low end drone going on, sounds just like bearings, but they were changed and the noise remains!! I thought it may be the diff, but they make a higher pitched sound when on the way out dont they?

One thing...

My hand brake barely works at all. You can wrench right up, lots of play in it, And it will hardly grab...

Could this be a prime case of the noise the handbrake can cause on AU's? Though I have to say, the noise can be very loud.

What else could it be?

does it get louder the faster you go..

and make a woo woo woo sorta noise??(like a high pitched version of 4x4 or truck tyres??

it will be a hard compound tyre... as i have it at 100-110kmh in my fairlane.. on my 20s i have Fullrun brand tyres on the rear.. and they are VERY hard compound(zero wet traction)
and very hard wearing

when i switched them over to my standard wheels nad tyres(dunlops).. the noise vanished!!

Its more of a grinding sound than anything else. And it may be a bit louder when slowing down through the gears.

Its like a constant dull roar...

oh ok definatly isnt tyres then lol

could be diff or a rear bearing in the gearbox etc??

have you got the availability to stick it on a hoist or dyno to get it rolling etc

When going around corners dose the sound go away or dose it get louder or the noise stays the same.

I would say it almost goes away.

And no, I know nothing about cars, so me inspecting would achieve nothing.

If your rear bearings have been done it sound like it will be your diff.

maybe diff, but going by waht you said about your handbrake.....i would be inspecting that first. your problem may be that the shoes need replacing and the grinding noise is the metal shoe eating into the drum (inside center of the rear disc). would explain why your handbrake isnt gripping. get that checked first as it will be cheaper then getting your diff checked out.

I hope so mate. Its a terrible sounding grinding/rubbing/roaring noise, very loud at times.

Can I do damage with this problem. I cant get it fixed during the week, amd I drive all day everyday. I have had the problem for a good month now and done 1000's of kms...

Its a massive pain trying to get this fixed, mechanic (I have two of em), just go "wheel bearing", replace it, and the problem is still there ! man, its really getting on my tits!

goto a better mechanic that isnt going to rip you off then!

the problem may lock up the rear end if it is metal on metal and it grips in and could do mroe damage..

try get it seen to ASAP

OK - it's a wheel bearing by what you describe.

If the noise goes away (mostly) when you turn left then it is a front left bearing. And vice versa.

Your symptoms (which include shudder under brakes) leads me to believe it is DEFINITELY a front bearing not a rear.

PS. In answer to your concern about what further damage can ensue - YES, a lot!. The front bearing could collapse completely (imagine the result if you're doing 110km/h down a freeway) and by the sounds of what you have described in your last post I would say DO NOT drive it this week. It would be safer and less expensive in the long run for you to hire a car rather than drive yours for 1km more with the sounds it is making!

Its done around 4000kms like this, hopefully one more day will be ok. hmmmm

Turns out it WAS a front bearing. Well whaddya know? Expensive exercise this whole thing, but at least know I can drive without fear of losing a wheel.

Saw an AU taxi with a collapsed front wheel bearing near Cremorne last week ... stuffed traffic up ... in the middle lane on Military Rd ... the front driver's side (same as that one I replaced) wheel was pointed at right angles to the crrect direction .... he was probably going slow so there was no damage done.

I hate from one to go while on the highway though ... you'd be lucky to live to tell the tale I reckon.
