Default v8 exhaust crackle

hey i was wonderin what is it that causes my exhaust to crackle and pop when im slowing down in gear? sometimes mine sounds like a rapid fire shotgun going off and although kinda cool also sounds a bit dodgy.

im running twin 2 1/4" exhaust straight through with hotdogs, is it the hot dogs? or is my engine running rich?

I've been told not to heat up my hot dogs in my exhaust system as the Co2 levels are dangerous...

A set of Zoomies out the bonnet will fix it. Seriously though it sounds like a back pressure problem to me. Removing mufflers and replacing them with hotdogs can cause this.

Just characteristics of an engine. The modern Ford BOSS engines do it.

To reduce/eliminate the crackling just add a balance pipe. If it is really bad you might need a bigger balance pipe like a Y or Kiss pipe rather than a H pipe. Or alternatively you can merge your twin 2 1/4" into a single 3" out the back which should also eliminate the crackle.

i have an AU XR8 Series 2....Its a 2.5" through to a 2.5" hotdog in the middle then and the end it has a smaller hotdog about 10 or so inches long as a bit of a resignator. When i drop it down it burgles and cracks and pops. Most cars will a pretty straight through exhaust will do it when dropped down to high revs. Most cars with an exhaust do it.

Sounds wicked

If it is backfireing and not 'poping' then you have a problem.

Is it really bad snap crackling?

I thought all 'sporty' V8s did it whether old or new, manual when slowing down in gear.

Mine has a nice snap crakle pop when slowing down :
Then boot it and listen to the symphony :evil3:
Then slow down, snap crackle pop...

My I6 AU EGAS ute never used to do it much but ever since my muffler got snapped off at the flange and I welded it back on it does it heaps when I drop it down to higher revs. Its 2.5" with a hotdog after the cat and muffler at the very back

I think it might be unburnt fuel going through to the exhaust, then the Pop is it burning on the hot exhaust... Don't hold me to it though, not 100% sure.

Must you "lolz" so much? It's quite painful to read.

On another note, as others have mentioned, I thought that an amount of crackling was normal. How much is it doing it though?

Agreed and the louder the exhaust will amplify it. Replacing the hot dogs would be a good start (they tend to make the crackling sound tinnie rather than deep) and some good tuning may minimise it. I guess you have to way up how much it bothers you.

even the ford I6 barra's can cackle and pop on downshifts, Rugers car, Pacemakers, 3inch cat and Xr6T pipes from the cat back would do it.. and the guys who have replaced the centre mufflers with resonators sound even better
