Default Near misses

alright so earlier this year I'm stopped at a light (red one) on Mt Alexandra road as I'm making my way home from work. cars go past and I'm staring off into space. as I keep staring into space a tow truck with a yellow 2 dr mk II escort drives past me. hmmm don't see those everyday, particularly if it was in fact a 2dr (even if it aint, hey who cares, it's an escort!). so given that in trying to locate a good project you pretty much find yourself turing into a stalker I ask myself do I follow the tow truck? In the end I don't and continue going home (had recently bought a 4dr mk II around that time) some regret there maybe

anyway it got me to thinking about all the potential near misses out there... times when you didn't leave that note on the windscreen, where you've raced back home to get the $ but missed it by a bee's dicksmith, times where someone has cut your lunch or the ultimate tragedy, where the car has been taken to the crusha

anyway any such stories, throw em up would love to read em (as long as they don't make me cry)

s.

back when el's were new, i noticed an car for sale in the paper (ef xr6 manual sedan) at a local caryard that seemed way too cheap. i think it was around 14k from memory (1997). had around 100000km which was high for its age but not too bad.

went and had a look and it was in very good nick considering its price. chatting with the salesman about some sort of deal when another sales guy walks out and takes the sign off and says some dude just bought it over the phone.

Not too many years back spotted a XB ( I think ) GS Coupe for.......$2,500! White with black striping, 302. In great nick.Couldn't believe it. Anyway it was parked in this old guys front yard but as it was dark at the time I thought I'll pop back the next day and have a decent look at it.
Some bugger beat me to it and snapped it up for $2k. Much swearing to myself about that!

Not me but my buddy stefan. His mum had sold his LJ and 350 chev engine he had bought, and after 2 years hunting he found one parked two streets from him! He approached the lady owner and she eventually agreed to sell for 1700$. He races home, arranges the cash and heads back, only to find his mum there, who successfully convinced the lady to hang onto the LJ!! She doesn't think poor stefan should buy a Torana and has basically ruined two chances of owning one now. Stefan doesn't live with his mum anymore!

Not so much a near miss...Anyway

My grandpa in tassie retired his XY fairmont, mint condition, bronze...lovely car.
had it sitting in the shed for ages and ages with a cover over it.
He said if I ever wanted it, it's mine to take.
Was going to organise for it to get up to QLD to restore her. (this year, XY for nothing, yes please.)

Rang him up one day...'Oh, I got rid of it. Some bloke rocked up one day and offered $1000 cash so I took it.'

Dammit dammit dammit.

Brown XB GT sedan at a local Ford show about 10 years ago, owner asking 5G.

Excellent condition XA Fairmont sedan with a factory 351 at a swap meet about 7 years ago, owner asking 3G.

This ones not a near miss, I actually had it and gave it up!. XA coupe; I bought it for $1800 as my first car, owned it for 18 months and sold it for $950. Sure it was rusting in most of the usual places but it would still be worth 10-15G nowadays.

Default not content with missing the escort

alright well I have another. one day not far from where I live I'm walking up the street to get some milk or some flinstones chewable morphine. as I pass by a street i see what looks like either an xl,xm or xp. I take a look and it's a burgundy xm coupe....yes please!! so I think ok I'll be prepared so I go home write a note expressing my interest which I intend to put on the car the next day. next day comes and off I go on my note leaving trip...car gone, haven't seen it since, I suspect it belongs to an older couple visitng relatives, in short....devastating. but I will have my revenge.

moral of the story...simple, if you snooze, you loose.
