Question Need Suggestions, Insurance for young drivers

Hey there guys. Im about to buy an xr5 turbo and ive been searching round for decent insurance. Im 23, i got my licence (p's) in 2004 and never had an accident or been booked. Obviously, because im 23 they want to charge an arm and a leg or just not insure me so i thought it would be helpful for others in the same boat to get a gathering of suggestions.

so far, aami has come up with 2000+ and justcar has quoted me 1800.

Some might say these are typical and reasonable. I know a friend with a skyline who pays something like 2400. All its got are a set of wheels on it.

So does anyone have any suggestions? good experiences?

updated. Just got quoted from nrma. just over 1000 bucks if you have roadservice and ctp greenslip with them also. Strangely, its cheaper with unsecured personal loan than secured.

Give GIO a shot, they are pretty good on price.
Do an online quote for every major insurer and see which is better.

The other option, if you dont like the price, dont buy the car for a few more years.
Youd have to have rocks in your head to fork out $2400 a year for insurance.

...or live in Sydney. The only car I've insured for the last 15 years for less than $2000pa was my last R32. A new Falcon XT would cost me $1700. 39 years old, rating 1 for life with no fines for 10 years.

I went through same choice for my 06 MPS 3 man... didn't bother with AAMI just did online quote with Just Car turned up at 1930ish.

Went to Shannon's showed them the car, with sunroof and other aftermarket mods value agreed value was 30k and i pay 1450 a year monthly. I'm only 21 and off my p's. But i live in a good area of town which saves me apparently like 30 - 50%...

Bonus with Shannon's they will try there hardest to save a car if something nasty ever happens; ie. they cover nearly all claims.

Exactly right davway. I am 24 and I pay less than 2400 for; house and contents, a 65 stang, new corrolla (girlfriends), and my daily drive buzz box put together. Thats through Shannons by the way.

chuck it through your parents if they are compliant about the idea and you as an unlisted driver. Cheap yearly (mines approx 700) although a very high excess (2000) if your not an idiot on the roads risk worth taking IMHO...

31yo, no fines, no crashes and rating 1 for life.

There is obviously a difference if price is determined by where you live, other than by what car you chose to drive on your P plates - thats what i was getting at.

I must be aamis millionth customer. Insured with adjusted excess for 740 per year, excess 1900 though. That's from a 20 yr old rating two with clean drivers history. And they gave me a slight discount on my excess, guy on the phone had a BA GT and took pity on me I guess!

How does a 20 year old get rating two, ratings used to start at six or seven and go down a level for each year of full comp.

In my limited experience (28 yr old male, clean record etc) Ive found that NRMA are the cheapest for under 25's and then afterwards they make their money back off you if you remain "loyal". I'd say go with ya NRMA quote and as soon as you turn 25, go shopping.

What you seemed to suggest was someone that paid $2400 insurance had rocks in their head. For me to drive a nice car in Sydney at 39 with a clean record, $2400 is pretty average.

I already explained what i meant by what i said once, im not explaining it again.
Maybe read it again instead of trying to make an issue out of nothing.

I'm currently paying $1100 through Just Car with an excess of $1900. I'm 21 and have never had and accident been booked once when I was 17, but clean since then. I started on a rating 3 Jan '09, but I'm not sure what I'm at now.

I considered AAMI and NRMA because they were the only ones that want to insure a 20yr old in V8, but settled on Justcar because of the lower premiums, yet higher excess.

You guys have got it lucky I pay $2806 with $3000 excess!

I am 24 and have a nissan S15 silvia, hopefully when I am 25 the price will drop!

I had a falcon xt that cost $900 with $500 excess. My tip is wait till you are 25 then indulge.

true that ill be waiting till im 25 till i upgrade, esecialy to any sort of forced induction. i cant imagine silvias (given the fact that they are frequently nicked and writen off) being cheap to insure by any method

What about Youi? I've heard terrible things about them (they ask way too much info for a quote, and are fully based online), but I have been able to insure a Honda Integra (under my parents name with me as a listed driver) for under $600/year (AAMI and NRMA wanted $700+ with me as an unlisted driver). However, their sales people are pretty annoying, and their quote process is complicated.

Was insured with my budget for $270 p.a but they wouldn't cover mods so I had to switch.

i got sent a quote by aami once for my 2005 XR6 N/A for 1450 bucks, im 23 and i was paying like 2300 bucks, rang them up about the quote and they said they stuffed up the quote, it was suppose to be for a rating 1 driver and im a rating 2 driver, but they still have to go through with it if i wanted to, so was good for me haha
