Just after last xmas the low coolant light came on, I topped the coolant up and checked it again today the level is just above the low level sensor, I have checked around and cannot find any leaks, it has taken just on three months to drop to this level. 97 el,.........head gasket? not I hope.

Check top and bottom radiator hoses and the small twin hoses running from the fill bottle and the hose under the filler bottle for wear or splits due to overtightening circlips or see if they are just loose. Replace some hoses if necessary, and replace the thermostat if it has not been done for a while, they are cheap. In some rare cases the actual radiator cap itself may have a crappy seal and could use a replacement. Another possibility is a leaking radiator itself. It could also be a slow leak coming from a small hole in the head gasket but it's not that much of a water loss to worry about too much at this stage. When the bottle empties itself fully in a couple of days or so thats when it's time to worry. Oh and also check for coolant leakage around the water pump as well with engine running.
Pics From an EF, not much different to EL sometimes these areas are overlooked for possible leakage.  Wow almost 2am, hmmm. |

To save starting another thread, will i trash those spring type clamps that hold on the small (twin) hoses if i remove them.
I was going to clean the bottle out but the clamps mentioned seem quite hard to remove. Do they come off & go back on ok? Anyone know? |
