My liveaboard neighbour at the marina had a 65ft John Pugh ketch we would take out sailing from Newcastle, I was at the helm heading out to sea (skirting along the northern side of the harbour, southside is full of wharves, cafes ferries) when we were screamed at by these racing yacthty types tacking in the harbour, telling us we had to give way as they were under sail and us motorsailing but this boat being a deep draft (8ft) was limited in water under the keel and couldn't alter course to do the danger of grounding. (Maritime law)
Certainly was an interesting conversation back at the marina that night.

Cannondale motorcycle division sent them broke, it was taken over by Pacific after that, all their employees lost their jobs at Bedford, PA. and production moved to guess where. Now they churn out bicycles like every other brand.

I compare this to the Holden Commodore.
Sticking badges on a well known brand and passing it off as something it isn't.
Back in the day your money bought a quality Handmade bicycle not a name like today.

Hence Commodore has died as well as it's a terrible marketing strategy as (most) buyers aren't stupid.

Not a bad bicycle, after all the Mitchelton Scott Pro racing team are using them. I'm a bit anal when it comes to all things Cannondale.

Please please understand that handling a sailboat isn't the problem it's the hazards around you. Unsolicited safety advice:

If weather comes upon you you probably can't outrun it, watch the horizon.

If you find yourself close to a lee shore that demands all your attention.

You have right of way over similar size motor boats but you can't count on them giving it, and you have limited control in close quarters.

You don't have right of way over large craft (ships) keep well clear.

If you boat is well ballasted and properly designed gusts are not your biggest problem, but reef early and often. There is little to be gained outside racing from carrying too much sail. The boat will do hull speed under little dacron. If you think about reefing do it and do it now.

Wear your life jacket and insist all crew do also. If you can't afford full safety gear you can't afford to sail.

Never fend off. Even small boats weight almost as much as cars, you wouldn't throw yourself in front of a car rolling toward a wall, don't try to fend off other vessels. Too many have lost digits limbs and lives.

Sage advice, Guzzis3! If you choose the wife who lets you have the cars, bikes and boats, you buy life jackets, Epirbs, two-ways etc etc to look after her.

Safety shouldn't be short-cut, or disregarded... you have to make sure you can come back for another go another day.

Gentleman I used to know had a steel 44 footer I think. Whenever someone called for him to yield he'd just reply 12 ton of steel. The looks were priceless.

I didn't mean to be depressing I was just trying to make the point that the problem with sailing isn't getting the boat to go to windward but rather dealing with the serious hazards on the water.

I sailed for years on boats with no engine at all and before my time, when dinosaurs still roamed the earth, sailing sans motor was common practice. Yes there are more things to hit now, but it can still be done.

I do do a double take when I row though. The idea you can just pick a direction and go is always a bit confronting...but no you can keep your planing motorboats. Work of the devil If you want to exceed hull speed it should be done on one hull like a normal person..
