The brake line's i had made year's ago were soft annealed steel bundy, silver coloured.
Bundy tubing i bought recently for a fuel return line was copper coated steel

My understanding is that if copper pipe is used for brake lines in Oz that is illegal...must be steel bundy tube

Steel bundy tube is the standard for the industry, both factory & aftermarket. It's cheap, easy to work & easily available.

Copper tubing is totally banned Australia-wide for either brakes or fuel lines. It easily fatigues & cracks as it ages & vibrates.

Trucks often use a copper-plated steel bundy for better corrosion resistance.

In more recent times a copper/ nickel /steel (cunifer alloy) type tube has become available. It seems to tick all the boxes re: corrosion & safety etc.

I've not used the copper/nickel type probably because it's over 3 times the price, but it sounds OK.
