Hey guys just a question i was mucking around with the auto modes today, i have found that the adaptive shift mode gives faster reaction on gear downshifts but what i have also noticed is it feels more responsive and snappy (engine feels snappier) i should point out i have a 3000stall and a adj shift kit.
just wondering if your cars are the same.

Yes the adaptive shift does feel diferent in it's stage's.

yep exactelly the same in mine , only downfall in adaptive shift though is that it doesn't hold the gears/rpm out as long as it does in no.1 power mode :( . - yet adaptive shift modes kickback of gears is more responsive than the power mode ..

I was getting confused between modes, so basically leave it in Adaptive and I kinda like it.

At least we can change modes with the push of a button ... the XR crew need to go through more of a fiddly process to change modes.

yeh it can be a bit of a pain in the a$$ but ive just left it in adaptive shift for now seems to be doing its job ok. Even if i have driven it like a old man for ages it still kicks back as fast as if you drive it hard its way faster then the performance mode so ill just leave it.

The XRs (VCT and XR8, at least) came standard with adaptive shift. Basically it learns your driving style, and shifts gears accordingly. The transamission can be set to run in either of the following modes:
1. Adapative shift
2. Performance Mode
3. Economy mode.

Instructions on how to change between modes should be in the owners manual if you have an AU2. AU1s missed the instructions, but still got the functionality.

I have a set of instructions at home I can post up here for anyone that wants it. It will not work for non-XR models (T series excepted)

Just following on from JC's post (which is 100% correct with the addition that XR6HP autos got it too).
There are actually 5 modes that Adaptashift can use.
1. Performance
2.
3. Mid
4.
5. Economy.

The unnamed fields are exactly that, unnamed. They fall in a sliding scale so 2. would be "mid performance" and 4. would be "mid economy". The term "Mid" is also not technically correct as it is also unnamed.

What Adaptashift does is review your driving "style" and select one of the 5 options. Also, as JC pointed out, 3 "manually" selected options are avaliable.
1. Adapative shift
2. Performance Mode
3. Economy mode.

Adpative will select for you 1 of the 5 options based on your style. Performance will lock it into maximum performance moded and economy into maximum economy mode.

Just to confuse you even more.. the edit can see all 5 of the options (including the hidden ones) and you could just lock it into one based on the edits selection.

Yep it is burried in there somewhere , for those who couldn't be bothered hunting it up , its easy .. as follows

(with ignition off and key out ) Put foot on brake , put t-bar in #1 for power mode , #2 for econ mode or #3 for adaptive shift , insert key and turn ignition on ( don't start the car yet though ) .. wait for the airbag light to go off , once its off move the t-bar to R ( reverse ) to confirm the selection... econ will flash a few times , NOTE: #2 mode will leave econ displayed after flashing, #1 & #3 mode flash econ 3 times then goes off with no display at all ;) . once confirmed move t-bar to park and start the car ..done

yep i run mine constantlly in mode #1 now , for the first week or so it seemed to kick back crap in power mode , but after a bit of driving like it was stolen and having it in power mode for over a month now , the auto seems to kickback/responsive as good as it did in adaptive shift + it also revs out harder,longer /harder shifts too , no more econ or adaptive shift for me ...

I found that having mine in adaptive shift the gear box would become lazy with all the freeway & open road driving that i do. So now i lock it into performance shift & it kicks back much faster. As for economy shift well i didn't notice any fuel saving use it, just softer gear changes.

You sneeze, blink, wink, cough and then sneeze to get Adaptive Shift;
You cough, wink, blink and sneeze to get Economy Mode.

Perf mode is definitely more snappier, although you'd be hard pressed to tell the difference in Adaptshift if you driving has been quite 'lively' as of late.

lol , too true , would be nice just to have buttons to change the modes , so they can be changed while driving , instead of having to have the car off to change modes !

yep , except my missus drives the car 50% of the time ( and like a granny ) , so its like a slug for the first 10 mins or so after she's driven it in adaptive shift , easier for me just to leave it in power mode , and the gearchange/kickback responsiveness has seemed to of improved since having it in power mode for ages now ??? , got me buggered why that 1 ? ..lol

I've just changed my to performance mode and there is definitely a difference. No surprise because most of my driving is on the freeway so I was proberly in eco 100% of the time.
So whats the deal with the different modes? Is it all gearbox or does it change fuel injection as well?

AU1's dont have any on dash indication

Even on the AUII XR6 when changing modes, in #1 power mode it only flashes 'econ' for a few seconds then goes off completely , #2 econ mode flashes 'econ' then the econ icon stays on the lcd display , and #3 adaptive shift also flashes 'econ' like power mode does and goes off completelly . There is no permanent icon/display on the dash in adaptive shift or power mode , only in econ mode does the econ icon stay on .

For the last couple of years have had mine in performance mode
Recently switched back to adaptive for a few weeks and found it was not as quick to kick down and changed up gears at lower revs
Have switched back to performance and find it better
I have Au2xr6vct so maybe the xr8 is better suited to adaptive
