Comparing trends in the 80s to now

Too young to remember trends from the 80s. Although my first Summernats was in 1990, but I was only 4.

My old man has a few Street Machines mags from the 80s, and early 90s. I always get a kick out of the way cars were modified back then compared to now.

remember those little aussie flag sticker's poeple used to stick on the the tops of their front gaurds just in front of the doors lol ???

thats what i had on the back of my tramp rods, (dark green xb coupe)

Ahhh Memories!!... I had blue oval Ford badges on chrome tramp rods on my Red & White 429ci 56 Cusso in late 70's. :
And, I think Edelbrock stickers on rear 1/4 windows

70's : Mickey thompson fats on the rear, hub spacers, airshocks, whip aerial pinned to the roof gutter, chromed and winged rocker cover screws on chromed rocker covers, chromed lawn mower piston gear knob, Impala shifter, denim seat covers, chrome plastic protector stripping on doors and arches, etc

I was never a fan of blowers,tunnel rams etc hanging out of bonnets. I much prefer the slightly modified stock look.

Not ugly or over-done like a set of 22" rims.

And they looked good on anything from an xr to an xe.

-Lots of bodymods, using fiberglass. Massive flares, spoilers etc.
-Chrome! Rims, engine, driveline....the more chrome the better
-Interior, Tv's, neon's lush coverings.
-Paintwork dominated buy candys and murals

And that reminds me, anything remotely resembling the above were always known as "Hair Dresser's Cars". I wonder what ever happened to that term?

spending big dollars on a rat rod is like buying hair products that make you look like you dont do your hair

and all the car ads always were based on camping from memory.
The falcon 500, cortina, escort etc ontop of a cliff with a tent next to it, wife holding a cooking pot with the kids runing around with a fishing rod, the dad leaning against the door smiling and the family dog sitting at his feet.
nowadays its just a picture of the car going round a corner with the background blurred out.

I personally look forward fondly to a time when we look back on these ridiculous 20"+ chrome rims with their rubber band tyres and laugh our heads off


I have been laughing at those big wheels for years especially when you have 5 male teenagers with their hats on backwrads or sideways looking like outcasts from The Sydney Mardi Gras listening to doof doof music that shakes every panel of their car and the cars around them. :
