Kevs das AU xr8 went around 190 rwkw on Saturday, G&D Air Box, Unichip has run 14.00..
------------------------------------------------------------------- We will be having a couple more cracks at a 13 in Hamo's AU 6, he has chosen to keep having a go with the AU6 first... at a later date he will start to play with the BA XR8 Ute.

interesting. I think that the 15.7 for the EL 185 seemed a little poor.
Makes me embarrassed to own an auto EL 185.. Surely that figure has gota be a bit iffy.

there are alot of variants in these tests tho.. i found that when WHEELS tested the EL series 1 vs the VT SS .. The EL did 8.4 and 15.9 the SS pulled a 8.4 and 16.1 .. however when MOTOR tested the EL XR8 series 2 vs the VT SS they got the XR8 to run 7.78 and 15.68 and the SS to run a 7.58 and 15.58. Almost half a second difference for the SS in two magazines. Showing that unless you throw yourself down the 1/4 you cant really believe the quoted ET's printed. Dont get me wrong they are a handy hint on what you should be looking at i just think more effort should go into consistency with thier testing.. like wheels ran the EL GT 8.1 & 15.8 so in thoery a 5spd XR and SS are as fast as the GT ?? its all kookai. but good on u for taking the time and effort to post up info for us to have a gander at.

The El GT is a heavier car than the XR but each test that is done on two different cars would come out different as many factors like driver ,equipment, weather, engine tune & ect would show different times.
Comparing the Ba's to the Au's & E series is a bit unfair as for performance the turbo & V8 Ba's have a tech & mech advantge over them in the first place. Now second hand BA turbo's are in the high 20thou bracket almost anyone one who has a job can borrow money & pay 70-100 week for a car that has very good performance from the factory. The troulbe is if your under 30 your insurance might be very expensive. |

I pay $100 a week for car payments, and $130 a month for insurance. But Im paying my car off in three years not five. And I pay more than than I have, so it should be paid off in 2 years and 9 months for a good credit rating.

I’ve noticed that my Automatic AU2 SR (I believe it would be a Forte?) has a diff of 3.08:1. What would happen to performance/fuel economy if I changed the diff to be 3.23:1 or 3.45:1? What’s involved in changing the diff and approx how much would it cost?
I plan on putting a sports exhaust and pacemaker headers on the car and I guess I would need to change the diff to be able to get the speed increase I am looking for (similar to AU XR6 VCT) ?

Just to change the diff to 3.45 would be around $900 fitted for new parts. If you got a full rebuild and LSD added.. about $1600 fitted. Economy.. Would use more fuel but not a massive amount. Performance.. it would be a noticable difference in theway the car launches.
Your other option is to get the rear diff from an AU XR6 HP wreck and just swap it over, could be more cost friendly. Also, its going to mess with your speedo so you would need to change speedo cogs in the gearbox if you wanted it to read correctly.. which will then mess with your auto shift points.. when need some sort of black box bypass or chiptorqe J3 chip or SCT edit to get around too. Bit of a bugger changing diff ratios sometimes.

So would the $900/$1600 from a performance specialist also include making sure that the speedo/gearbox shift points continue to work correctly?

These prices are just indications, dont hold them as "in stone". You might get it cheaper, you might pay more. Really just an indication for you.

you could do it with $80 worth of DIY Jaycar Speedo Corrector kits (about $40 each x2)

Just managed to get an October 1998 Motor mag with the new AU and XR test and here are some more interesting numbers from that test.
AU XR6 HP manual 1520KG 0-100k 7.88 0-400m 15.33 AU forte/Futura /Fairmont 1515Kg 0-100k 8.32 0-400m 15.98 AU XR6 VCT 1615kg 0-100k 8.07 0-400m 15.57 AU Fairmont Ghia 1650kg VCT 0-100k 8.31 0-400m 16.07 AU XR8 manual 185kw 1624kg 0-100k 7.20 0-400m 15.00 Lots of variation between tests just like dyno's |

OK AU Fairlanes,
Sept 98 Motor ran a Statesman vs V8 farlane Ghia test! 225kw 1735 kg Statesman turned 0-100k in 6.78 sec and 400m in 14.83 The Fairlane Ghia 175kw 1710Kg 0-100k in 8.25 sec and 400m in 16.12 Motor also tested the new AU T series 220kw 1664 kg TE50 manual turned 0-100k in 7.1 sec and 400m in 14.9 TL50 220kw 1745Kg 0-100k in 8.1 sec and 400m in 15.9 Wheels had more luck with a V8 Fairlane Ghia clocking 0-100k in 7.9 sec and 400m in 15.6. So with a VCT Fairlane think of 8 seconds to 100 and 16 for the qtr |
