Since everyone knows this (most anyway) you don't get the frustrated idiots weaving in and out of lanes trying to get past. Yes cameras can be used for revenue raising elsewhere, but they actually make tunnels safer imo.

There is only one speed camera in the Lane Cove tunnel and it's near the entrance on the North Rocks side (pretty sure it was that side, i don't travel it much). You can see the strips in the road.

All other camera's are just traffic cameras.

Tunnels need a camera, but not that freakin many of them. People will be too focused on the speedo then watching the road - thus causing more accidents then if people were doing 90 in the tunnel, just wait for the figures after it's open for a year

Well lets face it they wasted a couple of billion building it when there was already a perfectly good tunnel under the river.

Yep because everyone with an exhaust would be down there giving their car a bootful - Not for speed, but just for the sound hehe.. I know i would haha

Great idea! x2

I'm a big critic of the authorities only focusing on speed but one place that I think cameras do have their place is in tunnels.

Tunnel safety is pretty important - its very hard for emergency services to get down there when there is an accident and if theres a fire then its a pretty dangerous place to be. I drive the Lane Cove Tunnel every day - and like 99.9% of everyone else in that tunnel I sit right on 80km/h as I don't know where the camera's are or really care - its only 5 minutes to get through it. Unfortunatly when there is a crash - there was one only one 2 weeks ago (3 cars into the wall) traffic went into meltdown , people were stuck in the tunnel for hours, emergency services couldn't get through and it was just ridiculous.

I can guarantee you if there was no camera's in there everyone would be chopping and changing lanes 20km/h over (like they do for the rest of the commute to the city - tradies are THE worst) and you'd have many more acco's in there. Makes sense in this instance.

Personally, I think forcing us to use Etoll is far more evil than encrusting Clem7 in cameras....

It's a true story, bloke - It was only a tiny little tunnel, they later ran power lines through it. There's been photos of it published recently..
