We have always had spare money tins in our house and my boys have always had their own ones since they were little. Always the kind you can not break into and need a can opener to crack them open.
I have one just for gold coins and one for silver...I hate church change rattling around everywhere! We tend to open them around Christmas time. Last year I used some of the coins I saved to buy toys for the AFF Toy Run and the we also bought some other presents etc. The little money tin, holds between $300 to $400 depending on what you put in there and the large tin for silver only, is about $100- $180. You really don't miss the odd coin here and there and YES...It is amazing how quickly it all adds up! Cheers Col

My change goes towards taking my Dad and I to the Musclecar Masters every couple of years.
Best reason to save change I reckon. Ed

I've just got a container I put all my silver into.
Gold goes back in the wallet for a snack or drink out the machines at work, also handy to have a bit of gold. All the silver though, straight into the container. I then eventually bag it all up and take it to the bank. CD Case next to container for size comparison: Container is a bugger to lift at the moment. Heavy money is heavy!

Used to have a big coffee jar that I'd put 50 cent pieces in...it weighed a ton when it was full, can't remember how much was in there, but it was a couple of hundred.
It's better to have one that's made out of a tin or something...if you or your kids can see how much is in there, it's a constant reminder and too much of a temptation. "Out of sight, out of mind" and all that. |

went and bought one of the big tins today and emptied my drawer of change into it
still deciding if i want to get the kids their own to save/spend or have a 'family' jar.

I have one that can be opened. I get $100 or so in it before I open it.
I think I need an unopenable one so I can save better. |

This sounds like a great idea. There's always plenty of shrapnel lying around on my desk or in the falcon...I think it's time to start saving up! Thanks for the idea

I get 4.50 change from ten bucks when i buy a carlton dry at the pub so my change tin has heaps of 2buck coins and 50 cent pieces, take it to the bank every so often and put it into my account and usually get between 100-170 buckaroos.

My old boss cut a hole in the floor of his house with a hole saw and just fed the change under the house, when it filled up to floor level about 300mm he would shove a stick in and spread it out and keep going, been doing it for nearly 5 years now, only way to get it out is pull some boards up, his kids are good and getting chop sticks and pulling 2 buck out here and there

The mrs made me buy her an artsy piggy bank that holds only a bit, then gets emptied into a glass jar that I empty for coffee money... Think I need to head to the reject shop tomorrow!

Five cent pieces are everywhere. And I always seem to have heaps of them.
I'm going start putting my change into a money box I have at home. No more stubby holders for me!

my mrs raids my wallet of all the silver in it every night. We usually have a few hundred every year we spend on our anniversary.

I dont see the point of having hundreds or even thousends of dollars sitting in your house in a money box.
I put all my spare money in a high interest savings account. Currently about 5.5% Not much interest, but at least it's something. The only extra i get with my money laying around the house is dust. |

The point is its better saved with no interest than spent on junk you don't need( alcohol, fast food etc). I deposit a huge amount into my savings weekly but need living cash too. Whatever I don't use I put in the tin.
