Exactly same problem, Odometer in my car goes to dashes too, when problme comes.
Today i went to dash instrument specialist, unfornately he doesn't have Diagnose computer, have to find someone else. By charging me $40 checking fee, the Local ford dealer's solution is to replace the whole instrument cluster and fuel pump as well (as the result of their diagnose computer) cost $1550

Same dash fault found in UK's forum, so many people complain about this, they are in the process of approaching Ford regarding this as they believe it should be a recall as a 'manufacturing defect'.

Interesting.

Took the battery and battery box out of the car 2 weeks ago, tidied up the entire area and then reinstalled.

Haven't had the problem since. It may be as simple as a connection problem. Stay tuned.

Hmm, i pulled the battery box out of mine a while ago to change a headlight bulb and noticed a bit of corrosion underneath it. I took to it with a wire brush and some sand paper and painted it with some black underbody paint.
It'd just something i thought i should mention for people to keep an eye out for, it's the sort of place where by the time you see it, it'll be too late.

I replaced VSS (vehicle speed sensor) as recommended in other web forums, getting better, but not solve all problems... look for another couple of days

Cleaning up the connections on and around the battery was my next move, and given your result it seems like it may be the answer. Occasionally my battery light has been coming on, but all the gauges continue working. I've checked the charge rate when the light comes on, and it's a steady 14.3 volts, so it's not an alternator problem. I'll give the connections a clean and see how it goes.
