not quite two years ago i picked up a xp for a carton of xxxx gold, body was stuffed but was 100% complete went an got a trailer and bought it home and pulled the bits off i wanted then was just about to pull out of me drive way to dump the body off at a mates place when this teenager and his dad stroll in and ask what i was doing with it so i told them an then they asked if i would be willing to sell the old girl, so i said anything is for sale for the right price, they offered me a thousand bucks for the car a hundred to deliver wich was only 3oo metre's down the road and when i got there they gave me a carton of xxxx gold for being a good bloke for not ripping his son off, they still reckon they got a bargain, but i reckon i got the best deal of me life there i worked it out i made a thousand dollars for pulling parts off a car that i needed,,,,,,,.lol

`95 - got a XD ute, rusty but still regoed for 3 weeks, all new steering joints . guy i worked with asked if i could use it i should come and pick it up to save him taking it to the tip. sight unseen i said ok. a bit of bog and passed rego. drove it for 6 months and then gave it to my brother.

mid `80s - guy asked if i could borrow my brothers car trailer to help him take an old ute body to tip. walked into his back yard and it was an XA ute with GT bonnet, guards, dash, good doors. back was totally rusted out. saved him some fuel and took it straight to our yard. wish i had stored the panels instead of selling them to a mate for next to nothing.

another one was a bloke i knew was cleaning up his uncles old farm and said there was some old car there if i wanted it to come get it. it was a `36 chrysler sedan been sitting out side for many many years but all the metal work was still good. as i got home the phone was ringing . guy had seen it on the trailer and wanted to have a look. within 1/2 hour of getting it home i`d sold it for $300 . he was rapped at the price and it cost me about $10 in fuel and a couple of hours of mucking around with old iron.

This one is a true story and it hurts. Some time ago (15-20 years mybe) some lads were checking out Garage Sales in Mackay (I think Mackay but definitely in QLD). They decided to go to the one that mentioned a Ford LAST as they were holden freaks. Anyway they get to the garage sale with the henry, to find out it had just sold for $500. It was an XW GT, that had been driven from dealer to Garage. The young owner was killed that night in another car, and 20 years on the parents decided it was time to "Get rid of the old Ford" Top that one.

aside from the vg wagon the missus and I bought recently, this is the best i can come up with. my first car was a 79' ford escort ghia, mint interior, changed it from an auto and put a 5spd in. fortunately some nice lady thought she'd cross onto the wrong side of the road and write both our cars off. i am now car-less. find another escort advertised in boronia. go to have a look at her, she's a 2 dr 1600, 4spd manual. rust in the wheel but otherwise solid as rock . gent who had it up for sale was going to do it up for his sister but she wasn't interested. can't remember how we arrived at a figure but snagged her for $1600. from memory all she required for a roady was the mud flaps to be taken off.

sadly sold her about 10 years ago prior to starting uni. oh the pain. you win some. you loose some.

Missed out on a geniune XB GT apollo blue/silver coupe in mid 2004, the car was in need of total resto but was complete and registered, the stupid thing was that i rang up early that morning and told him i would be there straight away as i had the cash stashed away in my bedroom, but then i had a change of heart for an hour or so, because i had just moved in to my new house i had just built and was suppose to use that money for the landscaping of my backyard.
I thought bugger it the backyard can wait, I rocked up there as it was only a 10 minute drive from my home and sure enough he was doing the deal to some guy in his 50s, the dood selling it was a kiwi, he was a hard looking guy, reminded me of that character from the simpsons.
The price, a measley 5k driveaway, no need to tow it, she ran..........the shame, the dissapointment, the lost dream....=(

Well here's my "best buys".

A 1973 HQ GTS Monaro (sedan) in beautiful original condition for $3500 in approx 2004 - was in the Adelaide Trading Post. I tried to get it for $3000 but he would'nt budge. The only issue with the car was the engine rings were shot. I've still got it now.

http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b241/Munromad/1.jpg
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b2...d/77sizedb.jpg

It is currently undergoing a full restoration. It's the one on the right. The one on the left was another original HQ GTS sedan that I picked up for $500 but it was missing the ID tags. I stripped it and made a huge profit on parts.

A 1972 HQ SS for $800 about a week later. Was advertised for $1500 in the Trading Post. He told me a wrecker had offered him $800 which he knocked back because he didn't want it wrecked. I offered $800 and he took it. It was missing the original seats, steering wheel and rims but had the original engine in it. It was also painted gun metal grey (should have been Infra Red). It had been stolen and recovered (hence the missing bits) and the thieves had done burnouts until the clutch died. The guy was shattered and couldn't face fixing it.

A 74 XB Fairmont (302 auto) coupe complete except for one guard, grille and tail lights for $900 (not running) but very rusty. Held onto it for a few years and sold it as a rolling shell with engine and trans (matching No. engine) for $3250 on ebay about a year ago.

A 74 XB Fairmont Coupe (identical from the factory as the one above - Apollo Blue/Parchment interior 302 auto, air & steer) for $1500.

These were both in about 2006. I still have the good one. It was bought from the original owner in 1985 and stripped down to "do it up". The shell was rubbed back and primed and all the parts put in boxes inside the car. It sat in a shed until I bought it. The is a small patch of rust in the parcel shelf but the rest of the car is absolutely mint. It's the best coupe shell you could ever hope to find.

I also picked up a complete set of XB coupe stainless (every single piece) all fully restored for $880 (buy it now on ebay) in about 2006. Bargain!! It's all still in the plastic waiting for me to build the coupe.

Also picked up a VN SS Commodore last year. I bought it sight unseen except for some small crappy photo's on ebay. I reallly only wanted it for the engine and trans to fit to the HT Monaro. When it turned up it was in too good condition to wreck so I sourced some original rims and tidied it up. It's a very nice car now. All for the sum of $2500 plus $350 for rims with brand new tyres on them. I drove it everyday for the last three months. It's a great car to drive.

http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b2...umberplate.jpg
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b2...SSinterior.jpg

I picked up a HT Monaro around the same time for $5000. Probably wasn't a bargain but worth more than that now.
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b2...resized-01.jpg
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b2...resized-02.jpg

I picked up an XY GT replica last year. Got it for a very good price but to get it to the standard I wanted cost the same amount again ;-)
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b2...ofDSCF0545.jpg
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b2...ofDSCF0537.jpg

They're probably the best bargains I've got but a few years back I was given a NOS set of XB GT wheel centre caps. I had already purchased repro's for mine so I sold them on ebay for $480. Would get even more for them these days.

The guy that bought that coupe is a mate of mine. He's into ford hot rods. He thinks coupes are pigs. He'd been telling me to buy this car for a few months. I didn't do anything about it as I was building my house and I was too busy.

He bought it and is now restoring it!

I know of a deal whereby a genuine VL Walkinshaw was sold by a Holden dealer for $12000 as they thought it was a mock up. New owner very happy & been offered much more for it several times since. No not mine.

2008 mate phones me from Katherine N.T "What are those 2 door fords worth" (He's a Dodge man)
answer "depends on condition why?"
"Theres one next door at the scrap yard"
"Find out what they want and give me a call back"
Half Hour passes.
"$20.00 and it's yours scrap value"
This happened to me and now I own a rough XB hard top sitting in Katherine with no i.d tags for $20.00.
Just need to get it to brissy. The good straight rear bar is worth more than that.

I bought a HG or T manaro for $350 complete then sold it for $500 and purchased a number of XW and XY's that i sold the bits off maximum I would pay was $300 a car. That was around 1990. I look back at what I threw away now and cringe.

I was minding my own business yesterday busily working on my XY when my neighbour pulls up out the front with a HZ Premier on his trailer.

He does scrap metal for some cash on the side. I've always told him that if the ever gets's any old cars to let me have a look and if I can use the parts off them I'll pay him scrap value.

Well this is the first car he's turned up with worth looking at. An old guy gave it to him for scrap (rang him from his add in the paper) because he is too old to drive it now.

It's a HZ Premier (yes I know - a Holden!). 253, t-Bar auth (Trimatic), power steering, GTS dash and a very tidy interior. The body is very straight but the paint is looking a bit old. It was last registered a year ago so I think it's been sitting outside since then.

The only downside is that there is a bit of rust on the front of the roof where water got under the vinyl roof. The rest of the body is pretty good. Perfect bumpers and twin headlight front end.

He wanted $300!! The dash is worth more than that. Needless to say its mine now :-)

Had it happen twice, first time at a local wreckers looking for a door lock for a laser, there were a few XY's all were stuffed one had a perfect driver side rear door ( and I mean perfect, no rust, no dents, no scratches) I asked him he says $20, Done. Second time XY rolling shell lookg good no visible sign of rust $500, Done.

I turned down an 80 series landcruiser running and registered for $650 a few weeks ago because I had 4 cars and a quad already at the time.

In December 2007 I bought a 2000 magna solara for $3000 with about 104,000kms on it. I sold the car in march this year with 145,000kms on it for $3000.
Good value for money for a cars standards.
