I hate the fact that everyone criticizes it...mostly they are crap cars, slow, ugly etc.

One guy at work used to say his BA XR6 was way better, yet it was worse on fuel, handled like a barge (if I ever chased him I had to be on the brakes around every corner) and was slower than my XR. So his reply?

"It's still an AU"

At least my car can be picked from the crowd...his was just another Mercury Silver BA XR6, along with the 5 or 6 others on town...

Apart from that, just the rattles. But they only turned up after the ultralow spring/18" wheel combo...I wonder why?

Some good points so far! I pretty much agree with everything so far, other than reliability issues and the headlining. My headlining is fine, and the car has been ultra reliable for 3 years now, requiring nothing other than servicing. Guess I'm lucky!

I guess you've adjusted as much as you can?

When we go away (3 or 4 times per year) it's usually 3-5000 kms in a week or so.

We've only been back a couple of weeks from a Bris - Cunnamulla - Charleville - Roma - Biloela - Bundaberg - Bris, all up 3500k in 5 days, and I've always found the seat and seating position particularly good in my Ghia.

I'm average height (5'10") so unless you're very tall/short/fat or have back probs I'd be inclined to try and fiddle with the settings a bit more.
I'm also 57yo so a fair bit off my prime.

It took me a while to get the "perfect" settings but I fiddled until I did.

Keep it up people and the thread disappears.
I'll keep an eye on this and if it degrades further I'll have to take action.
Now play nice.

I had an AUIII Fairmont and absolutly loved it.
The general ergonomics were a pain though. Like most , I could never seem to get comfortable. Actual seat comfort was good , but the seating position was crook and the steering wheel would not go high enough. I also hated the window button location , having to curl your arm up to push them. And EVERYTHING seemed to be a reach , gear selector , climate control and stereo.
I also had some permanant rattles and a buzz/rattle from the dash that would pop up every now and them. The brakes would also wilt under insignifcant pressure.
Apart from that , every thing else was great. The engine was torquey (thrashy above 3000rpm though) , the steering was fantastic , the ride was ok and the interior & exterior build quiality was brilliant. The two B-series we have are terrible in this regard(gapeing interior pannel gaps).
I think I'm going to miss the old Fairmont.

I've never had rattles in the dash, but my windows do rattle at times when i am stationary and my engine orbits between 500-600rpm, possibly something to do with the alternator

Actually an oil change can fix it. Use the heavier 85w Penrite Limslip gear oil and the Penrite LSD additive and I guarantee that the diff chatter will stop.

Yep that is diff chatter. I used what I said above and it fixed that, it's worked for every other person I've told too.

when mum brought home one of the first AU's i was pretty amazed at the styling... and it looked really cool.. untill the next morning when she went to drive it , it wouldnt start... admittably it was a pre release car but wasnt stoked.
When i had one as a work car the things that got me were much the same as everyone else
- dash rattles
- rear windows winding themselves down
- hot/cold air mix ( but that annoyed me in my EL as well)
- my recirc fan used to stick on
- there was a 'cricket' like noise coming from behind the glove box and it drove me nuts, ford looked at it half dozen times and couldnt find it
- the sunroof would stop halfway and require a re set
- headlight angle.. when driving towards an AU its not great, driving one the headlights are fine
- smartlock remote used to barely work
- the rake of the windscreen

hmm only a small list

Next person who wants to stir something in this thread will lose access to the AU forums

That is unless we get to start a "what do you hate about E Series" thread
