FYI

There is a display in Melbourne today comparing the Genesis to Mercedes.

It's at Fed Square if anyone is interested.

Answer a question with a question....

Genesis won't come here with a V8 (yet) so I don't see the relevance.

You claimed that not having a hybrid system is a 'complete fail in today's market' yet, of the top 10 sellers here only one has a hybrid.

Do you really think the Koreans are stupid, or that they have reached where they are now by bloody accident? Don't kid yourself. Spend some time looking into their history as a people and perhaps you may grow just an ounce of respect for where they are now, especially knowing where they came from just 60 years ago.

And I thought Aussies generally barracked for the underdog!

I get it, you (and ALL the people you know apparently) don't like the car. Good for you. But at least have a decent and adult like argument for why.

Genesis is a big disappointment on paper. Way too heavy, uses way too much fuel (25% more than a Calais). And missing some basic must-haves such as blind spot assist and memory seats on the 60k base - and missing other features such as sunroof and heads up display that other cheaper cars have. The Genesis can't even tow which reduces the level of practicality compared to a SUV or 300, G6E or Calais.

Really the Genesis shows how good value the locals are and how well-engineered they are in terms of fuel use and performance.

I wonder what's the deal with the towing? You are right that there is nothing stated which comes as quite a shock actually.

Agree with the rest as well. We shall soon see if the $60k starting price is a little too ambitious.

Don't underrate the strength of Hyundai. In Europe, Hyundai/Kia are together the 5th top-selling brand (2013 annual figure) after VW, Ford, Opel and Renault - and they're chewing the tail off the figures for the last two. I think a lot of people wouldn't have qualms about buying them over a BMW considering the latter's variable quality reputation over the years. Most Hyundais for the European market are built in Czech Republic and Kias in Slovakia.

Who cares which top ten cars in australia aren't hybrids?

There are more hybrids sold in the US every year than all the cars produced in Australia by all manufacturers.

Who in their right mind would release a new car in 2014 purporting to be relevant when it's just a gas guzzling flagship? Hyundai...

Only 15 years too late.

It will fail....just wait and watch petrol prices in the next few years.

The Genesis is primarily for the American market where most would be towing with a pickup truck.

The lack of hybrid is also puzzling considering its American bias, hybrids are very popular in the US

And it'll be the American BMW market that they're targeting.

As long as they don't shoot themselves in the foot with run-flat tyres without a spare. Some things the Germans just don't get.

Hyundai do sell hybrids in the the US, perhaps they will wait till the third gen model to launch the hybrid? Just like they waited for the second gen model to release here.

We are not America.

Their population is what, 12 times ours.

90% of our best sellers here don't have hybrid - how stupid they must all be according to you. So, at this point in time forcing hybrid technology upon buyers who don't care for it is just dumb.

It has far from failed.... They sell a bomb in the US, and I find it ironic that a company better known for small, fwd cars is giving us a large global rwd sedan, something Ford HO has witheld from us, even though they have been doing large rwd sedans since Adam was a boy.

This is my fear, I think Hyundai have produced a good car, I just doubt they have the pricing correct (at least for our market).

"Base" model starts at $60k, then goes up to $71k and then $82k (all plus on roads) for the top model. Seems a LOT of cash for a V6, the V8 should be here for those prices..

I's also not convinced they have the options right..

I cancelled my test drive with Hyundai Australia for that very fact. They leaked for the preceding six months that there would be two models with BOTH coming in under the LCT.

Top spec at 90DA - no thanks.

I let them know that I don't like price gouging and it seems that a few others on Whirlpool have cancelled citing the same too...

Sorry mate, it's just your avatar ..I just keep laughing at the image of a grown man driving a Festiva..and arguing so vehemently about the merits of a full sized Korean luxury car.

The price of oil has dropped from over US$100 a barrel to $75, and I have heard some economists tipped it may even go as low as $60. So struggling to see how petrol prices will soar over the next couple of years. Last I heard the US was now totally self sufficient in oil supplies and no longer relied on foreign oil. That is having a big bearing on oil prices.

Geeze, how should I reply? "I know I am, but what are you?"... When I grow up I want to be just like you

The Festiva is long gone, but it remains my avatar because I like to be reminded of my humble beginnings.

What I drive is of no concern of yours. I'm in a position where I can buy pretty much any car I desire, but with an expecting wife and a half finished building project I'm sure a more mature person such as yourself would understand that there is a time and a place for everything.

I will buy something nicer when I have more garage space to store all my cars, in the mean time, my blue Fiat Coupe turbo is plenty man enough in my opinion.

A person who relies on cheap shots and poor humor as a reply proves they really have no reply at all of any merit in my opinion.

Tempted, I think you mean Ford and Holden make cheap nasty cars.
Hyundai have been producing great cars for a good price.
They also have more money than Toyota now so you will start seeing them taking the No.1 spot within a decade.
Toyota in the 70s were Hyundai in the 90s

Don't bother, some will take longer to understand/accept the shift..
I was around when the Japanese were worse than the South Koreans were 10 years ago. We all said the same about Toyota and Datsun in the day.

Ford and Holden are the last brand people would consider at this price point and no amount of flash gizmos, stickers and marketing will ever change this.
We may think of Euro buyers as badge snobs, but the reason brands such Mercedes Benz and BMW are held in such high regard is because they have always been innovators in the automotive world.
Ford/Holden and Australians in general never have and never will be innovators. They simply take others ideas, technologies, innovations and designs and modify/refine them to come up with their product. Hell, even the badges on the Holden are ripped off from another marque.

Best Ford/Holden stick to what they are best at - producing cheap nasty disposable econoboxes for the plebs.
So interchangeable

We've got just about most of the Hyundais at work and I really dont think they are better than anything else in particular. They get rattly as hell after about 30k kms, parts of the interior fade after only one summer, paint is thin, carpet is awful, engines get rattly.

I actually think Kias are better. Cerato > I30, Optima > I45/I40, Rio > I20

Most Falcon and Commodores are fleet/company cars also, but are they just crap because they are crap or possibly because they are trashed also?

Once bought a ba falcon with 325000km in '07 . Apart from a sagged drivers door and squashed driver seat foam, it was still more comfortable than a new hyundai or kia..

Default Re: Hyundai Genesis to target BMW

I just stopped in traffic next to Stillwell Hyundai ingle farm adjacent their predelivery bay. A tech was reversing out a genesis in a light blue colour, I must say what a classy car from the rear, like a pinched I40, the side profile was BMW, at this point the car behind me beeped for me to drive off.

I'd have to agree the ba was probably more comfortable than an 07 hyundai or kia,
but I'll bet it'd be a different story now, they've come a long way.(I'd like to drive a Genesis and FGX, G6e back to back.)
I have to admit I'm not going to buy one any time soon, but I think they're a much better vehicle than some people on here are giving them credit for.
