I tend to buy LG... Ive had my 47 LCD since 2008.. I used it day in and day out for gaming/foxtel/etc and it has never let me down... Still going strong now with perfect picture and no drama's.... Apart from me dropping the remote to much and loosing the battery cover...lol...

Also bought their top of the range 60 at the beginning of last year and its been the same... Never had an issue.

When I bought the Newer LG, I seriously looked at a Hisense 65" and for the money it looked good... In the end I decided to get the slightly smaller LG because to my eyes the picture was light years ahead...

I don't rate Sony anymore, they used to be the pinnacle of consumer (and professional) electronics. The only Sony product I'd buy these days is their A7 series mirrorless cameras.

So slightly off topic what is a good TV these days if the likes of Sony et al. are dropping the ball on quality?

I have a LG for 10 years now with out drama and toy with the idea of updating.

I'm no gear head in that respect so have no clue as to what is good or not.

I don't think you'll go wrong with any well-known brand. LG make a good product. We've had an LG 55" LED LCD 1080p tv for about 8 years or so. Excellent tv, absolutely cannot fault it and have never had any issue of any type. It's as good as the day we bought it, I would buy another LG if something bad happened to it.

On a tangent: we got the tv when 3D tech was still all the rage but honestly we've only used the 3D a couple of times (Avatar, Beowulf). I would use it all the time but nothing is in 3D. I even knew it was just a gimmick at the time but the 3D underwater scene looked so cool in the store

Such is life. I should mention I also have a 2 year old LG model (exact same size/type) in the game room and it's just as good, if not better than the "old" one.

So what do you recommend if you don't rate Sony (a brand I am leaning towards).

I am seriously considering the 65" Aldi TV for the kitchen/dining area, really if it works for 4-5 years it will be a good value TV, and won't look out of place as it's quite a large kitchen and dining area.

Then what would you recommend for a dedicated theatre room, the room is already prewired with all speaker cables, HDMI, etc etc, just need to buy a TV and surround sound system.

Won't be buying that till probably December this year or January/February next year at this stage.

That is actually the one we are considering for the theatre room at the moment. 75" Sony Bravia.

XB if you're doing the full-on home theater thing you should consider getting a good projector and a screen. My brother has one and it's pretty damn hard to beat.

Don't really know anything about them, might be something to look into, still have about 6 months before we move in at this stage.

The cheapest one you can find with the features you want. The differentiating factors that made Sony, Panasonic (and Pioneer initially) fantastic are long gone. Their build quality, level of engineering, picture quality and connectivity options left everything else for dead. But they succumbed to market pressures and started cutting corners.

Just spend 10 minuter reading the Aldi TV reviews, well I don't think I will be buying one 80% bad reviews and many issues with quality I think I will look else where.

It doesn't mean anything these days with engineered obsolescence built into every price point, not to mention the fact that the same plants make 90% of the TV's on the market. Every single manufacturer is guilty of badge engineering to some extent, some moreso than others.
