It’s funny that some contractors can have theirs in the crib room while permanent fitters sitting next to them can’t use theirs. I want mine for my music & podcasts since our radio reception in the machines are generally rubbish
Its also the usual story of one bad egg ruins it for all. The temptation to play with it while driving is to great for some and companies simply wont take the risk.

Yep, I’ll agree with that but if someone can’t leave the device alone long enough to drive to the dump & back without using it I’d say they’re in the wrong industry. With the cameras inside the truck watching you for “fatigue” I’d say you’re on your own to fight for your job if you are caught operating while driving.

I have no problem someone using it sitting at the digger or crib hut.

Honestly won’t surprise me if our drivers licence ends up being like that in the future. Get caught, lose it.

My son-in-law is a drill operator.

Applied for a job (sent resume, referees, etc) with Rio in WA on Wed last week had a job (subject to usual stuff) next morning.

Starts in 3 weeks.

Could be of interest to WA peeps or those willing to fifo.

Default Re: Who works in the mines and what doing

I'm looking for some advice from those of you who work FIFO and/or in the mines.

My brother-in-law, who is currently a upholsterer, is looking at making a career change. He wants yo get out of what he is doing but is concerned that going back to school to get a trade at his age will take too long and/or cause a financial strain.

I jokingly suggested that he should get himself a job in the mines, FIFO. He actually seemed pretty interested.

So, what sort of work and pay could an unskilled person get? To get into driving, say a dump truck for eg, what quals would he need to have, what would it cost to get those quals, and how long?

Is there somewhere (websites, etc) he could do some research and get more information about what is available and how to go about pursuing it further?

Appreciate any assistance you can provide.

Plenty of greenskins starting in the Bowen basin currently

$46.50 thru Labour hire mobs and 84 hr's a week.

Yearly performance reviews can see upskilling and pay rate upwards of $59 hr within 5 yrs

Thanks, sounds promising. How would someone get into one of these jobs? Where would you start to put out some feelers or get more info. I have no idea where to start.

Any help appreciated.

Any location he’s after? There’s usually plenty of work around. I don’t agree how the contractor operator roles are but that’s usually the best way in. As a permanent I understand the use of contractors & why the company use them but for someone doing it long term it’s rubbish they aren’t paid the same as us!

Around the hunter I’d say programmed, workpac. Also have bhp contractor option. Not so much fifo here tho (maybe mt arthur - bhp).

They are always chasing people in Broken Hill but it's residential not FIFO. They seem to employ people with no experience because they can't get anyone else. It is a good option to get into the industry.

I dont work in the mines I work for the mining company's. Consult on plant and equipment failures and breakdown. Always plenty of monkey abusing the equipment. And fitters installation issues. And manufacturing defects.

With the way WA mining is I can work till Iam 100.

I did drive a 785 truck as well as front-end loader and excavator for a year back in 93. Worked on the bomb crew as well. Operated a drill rig.
