Drink driver crashes outside church

What a week for Victoria

POLICE have nabbed an unlicensed drunk-driver nearly six times over the legal limit outside the funeral for one of five men killed in a car crash at the weekend.

The man came to police's attention after the rear of his car struck another car outside St Francis of Assisi Roman Catholic Church in Mill Park, in Melbourne's north.

About 200 mourners are gathered at the venue for the funeral service of Anthony Iannetta, 18, who died when a Ford Falcon driven by 19-year-old drunk P-plater Steve Johnstone slammed into a tree on Plenty Rd, Mill Park, on Sunday.

Police were unsure whether the 47-year-old man from Mill Park was reversing or if his car rolled backwards.

Another motorist stood in front of the man's car to prevent him from leaving the scene.

The man was barely able to walk as he was escorted across the road to a police vehicle.

Quite clearly has no regard for his own life or anyone elses to be unlicensed and that drunk... 6 times the limit = 0.30 which is completely WASTED...

Lock him up, make an example...

Just wait until the politicians get their hands on this... I can hear a KNEE-JERK reaction to this...

But at least it will be something....

What the hell, where does a person that has a 0.287 BAC need to be at that time of the day, even if they were to make it to their destination, they'd be to drunk to do whatever it is they had planned.

Driving to a funeral of 4 people killed by the hands of driver who was drunk who also died. Does this person have any brains at all. Who cares for his reasons, he needs to be hung out to dry.

This country is too soft on drink drivers. We all enjoy a drink, and we do it in moderation and we know that getting behind the wheel drunk is a big no no. Why do people continue to do this?

Seriously :rolleyes: Thankfully it's school holidays or there would have been kids everywhere (it's also a primary school). What a moron.

I went by the accident scene at lunch and notice the authorities have reduced the speed limit - hopefully only as a temp measure - near the scene to 60kmh because of the imbeciles who are all parking their cars there to graffiti people's back fences with messages of condolence. Classy.

I am not sure why they are letting this continue...it is a no parking zone and it is quite simply dangerous to have vehicles pulling off to the side of the road on a gravel shoulder, not to mention getting back in to traffic.

Stiff if you're mourning I say. Get someone else to drive you around if you're too 'distraught' to make any sensible decisions yourself. This guy better cop it hard.
If I were one of the houses with the graffiti'd back fence I'd be out there with a pressure washer.
Someone should erect a temporary fence to stop them pulling over.

Drunk drivers seem to get left off so lightly despite the ruff talking of the police.

Court systems an lawyers have a bit to answer for.

you drink and drive and get caught. license gone for a year, no if or buts. Comunity service for the year aswell.

Do it twice and get locked up

My aunty is on her 4th DUI... they won't get locked up.

Even if its a week...

I Wander why he lost his licence in the first place ?? DUI ??
Goes to show the attitude to the law and life in general if he's a family member etc...

Just remember that when the media plaster the next 'reckless police pursuit' all over the place and remember they are just trying to catch them so they can stop/prevent this kinda thing happening...but that's a whole other thread.

How many threads do I have to read on this?
I am aware of drink driving and the effects.
My kids are aware of drink driving and the effects.
5 Victorians lost their lives and while tragic,
it is the parents responsibility to educate.
Don't expect everyone else to raise your
children.
47yr old should have known better.
What sort of message is this sending?

I don't think any message is getting through.

The accident site has been littered with booze bottles all week, and the last couple of days burnout marks fishtailing up the street from the exact spot where it happened. I was told today most of the kids that have been there as well as today's funeral didnt even know them, it's a chance to be seen on TV and be cool in the latest outfits.

Wonder what will happen when the council decides to remove all the memorials from the tree. Last year over in the east somewhere they turned on the council workers.

Might sound cold but I have no sympathy for drink drivers or people stupid enough to hop in with them. I'm just glad that no innocent people were harmed then that would be a targedy. People caught that far over the limit should be charged with attemped murder. Might be over the top but it's the way I feel, when I hear about this kind of **********.
