It had a name?
Recently my folks off loaded alot of meat from a calf they had up at the farm. They called the calf "rocco" so everytime we eat it... You think rocco. So the Mrs an I often have trouble eating what we've been given. Even when we go to my folks place, through a meal you get comments of... "Rocco is great tonight" "Rocco goodness" "Stewed Rocco" "Rocco bolegnase" The list goes on, and needless to say it turns some people off... The Mrs pretty much refuses to eat it.

Having grown up on a farm this was pretty common place.. I have never had a problem with it but i know of some people that do.. I guess its just one of those things..

Naming a calf means that someone cared about it, it had a happy life on a farm, and when it's time came it was served, eaten and remembered.... what else can a cow hope for?

Every animal has a name. You know what chicks are like, that calf's mother would have had his name picked out years before he was born. Would have been one of the more common names as cows aren't as concerned with being hip like us. Probably something like "Moo", "Mooooo", "Moo Moo" or "Gavin".

As long as I didn't have to kill it, skin it, gut it or cut it up I would eat it.
And even if I did I would still eat it. It's doing the rest of them I'd find hard.

I grew up on a dairy farm and as you work daily and closely with the herd you get to know the personalities of the cattle and their offspring pretty well. And they all had names essential for recording herd testing results etc and some even came when called by name. My father could never bring himself to kill and butcher any of our herd himself and many neighbouring farmers felt similarly so we had an arrangement where we swapped cattle for butchering with neighbours or relatives (who were also dairy farming in the area). We also never mentioned which farm the meat came from when visiting each other and sharing meals. A few who had sheep didn't (except for the occasional pet lamb) have the same qualms about butchering their own unnamed sheep. Pigs were similar to cows as most dairy farmers had less than 20 they hand fed each day and got attached to as well (and pigs intellect especially compared to sheep shines through).

It's unnecessary comments like that which cause the problem of turning you off it. So for me I'd vote "yes". The name doesn't ruin it for me. It's the people who for some reason like bringing up that they killed a named creature, whilst eating it.

once you get over helping to kill, hang, gut and cut up a cow eating it is suprisingly easy. we normally ate whatever animal had given the old man the most hastles at the time so in a way we were happy to be eating our own meat.

To call it a name means that the animal was thought of enough to have a name...
I find human nature repulsive and therefore love animals, both alive and cooked. But to eat an animal which has been named seems wrong. My grandfather had a pet pig..."Hans"...eventually he was killed and cooked...terrible. If you name it, IMO, it's part of the family.

This is why it's a good idea to give the animal naming process some forethought and choose names like 'Hamburger', 'Potroast' or 'Stir-fry'.

If I don't know the name of the meal, I make one up so as to personalise the event further.
I also like to pretend that the greens are the fodder it was going for at the time the axe fell. Damn I like being on the pointy end of the food chain. |
