Default Ute is sold. XR5 today...

Hullo all. Just wanted to introduce myself as a new XR5 owner. My circumstances have changed, and so my FG XR6T has been sold.

I pick up my 5 today, all being well. I got cruise and reverse parking sensors fitted, so hope thaey work ok ...

Things I will miss: climate control, excellent auto, huge grunt , motorbike (and other stuff) carrying capacity, excellent long-distance comfort, steering wheel-mounted controls.

Things I won't miss: not being able to fit the car in our garage, under-damped front end, underdone brakes, creaking dash when I went around (any) corner.

Things I'm looking forward to: great handling, ease of parking, good brakes, slick manual gearbox, good sound system and just all-round driving fun.

Welcome to the world of small fords. I haven't driven an XR5 myself but my Zetec is fantastic so I'm sure you're gonna love it.

Hey 6T.

as bourney said...visit www.fordxr5turbo.com and you'll find a wealth of information.

in regards to your concerns, however, I've put my responses in RED. And added one thing to look forward to!!! ;)

Things I will miss:
climate control[the heater is excellent...the air con on really hot days however...],
excellent auto[I came from an auto and I was worried about this, but honestly you'll have too much fun driving to care],
huge grunt[my xr5 runs 13 second passes with over 440nm torque at the wheels...does that suffice? ;) ] ,
motorbike (and other stuff) carrying capacity[assuming you're talking about a towing ability....the xr5 can fit a towbar as you'll see on the xr5 forum, but if its inside you're worried about...drop the rear seats and you have territory boot capacity],
excellent long-distance comfort[don't be too concerned...the recaros are a beauty to travel in]
steering wheel-mounted controls. [Yes, you're right, but there is audio controls pretty close]

Things I won't miss:
not being able to fit the car in our garage - Ha ha ha...I like having a hatch too now...
under-damped front end - The suspension is good...throw coilovers on and it a whole extra level up...but the system is designed well already
underdone brakes - They're HUUUUUUUGE 320mm on the front
creaking dash when I went around (any) corner. - Wait till you hear the door seals... :O

Things I'm looking forward to:
great handling, - Tick
ease of parking, - Tick
good brakes, - Tick
slick manual gearbox, - Tick
good sound system and - It's ok, but better than some stockers
just all-round driving fun. - Absolutly!!!

I'm not sure if the dash or body is different between a normal focus and xr5(I doubt), I get the creaking noise from my focus dash, I think its the rubber between the front windshield and dash.

I've always wanted an xr5, but too expensive. so I got a normal ls focus and xr6 and you are rite, the falcons dont give me much room in my garage...

I only get to drive mine on weekends.
SO gets it the rest of the time.
Could not get rid of my ute, and V8 grunt is always handy.
Rally car fulfils my speed need, but yes the 5 is very nice.

Thanks all for your words.

I was referring to the 6's underdone brakes, underdamped front end and creaky dash - the 5 has the same diameter fronts and, I hope, a dash that doesn't creak like Jessica Watson's boat, and a much better-damped front end.

No doubt I'll miss the ute, but not enough to be too upset.

My TE50 T3, now that's a car I miss every day DJM23. Having to bow to practicality and sell it was cruel. I can only hope the little 5 has enough character and reliability to be a keeper.

Hmmm ... if that's all you wanted you could have bought a T3

... and had change.

[QUOTE=T3man] Hmmm ... if that's all you wanted you could have bought a T3

:evil

G'day Jeff! I was expecting a blast from the T-series corner ...

Nah, much as I would dearly love to have another one, we had to get a car that was easy for Anne to drive around town too, and one that would fit in the garage. The new garage is too ******* short and narrow, with one car behind the other. Not sure what the designer was thinking, but he obviously isn't a car guy.

I wouldn't have followed the XR5 thing if the ute had fitted, but it won't, so we started thinking sideways. And it might well be a good thing, amazed as I am to say it. This is a great little car to drive, and has a bit of that elusive soul thing, I think.

Hope all is well on the east coast, mate.

I had no idea. They looks like exactly the same car with different engines, trans and suspension as well as the accessories. Why would they make the xr5 elsewhere?

I'd reason that as the engine (volvo based) is european built it wouldn't make much sense to ship it to Sth Africa for fitment... there are a lot of other under the hood differences so it's easiest to run them out closest to the biggest market.

Good news for AU XR5T owners... Euro quality.
