but total sales never been higher. Now that cars are more affordable most people just want cheap disposable white goods. It's no longer an investment, or even particularly hard to raise the finance these days. Ford and Holden simply can't seem to offer anything in that market place that competes with the Hyundais, Kias and Chinese crap.

I'm sure Holden would have sold more than 58k in 1961, they were making about 120-130k cars per year then. There were some exports, but not that many surely!

I think Dowling has only looked at Holden's passenger car figures for 1961 and missed the light commercial (ute) numbers. |

Pretty much. In terms of perception, Toyota is the most reliable whitegood (we all know that's debatable) and the Koreans are armed with great warranty and reasonable longevity. At a price point.

Makes me wonder whether the next great wave of low cost vehicles will be the Chinese..
I saw a JMC crew cab ute the other day that looked suspiciously like a previous Gen Ranger/BT50. |

Shadowing by 500 sales? How do you work that out? Hilux finished the year with 51,000 odd sales to Ranger 42,000 odd sales,I would say that is a pretty convincing win for Toyota.Even in the 4x4 segment they sold more than Ranger.

2wd hilux continues to be popular with couriers too, I see way more Chinese Utes and vans coming through work than I do Rangers.
In fact, I reckon there still more Falcons being used than Rangers. At least coming through my work anyway. Ldv vans must be selling well, it's either them or hiaces with the odd euro van. Yet to see a single transit. |
