Is it CFI or multipoint?
Are you sure the dizzy is not 180deg out? Also, double check your spark leads.

the rotor on the mpi ones are different to the cpi ones so that may be the cause of your woes

What I mean is that you might have the engine on TDC but on the exhaust stroke, not the compression stroke.

IS this Distributor NEW or another one? Have you made sure ALL the connections are clean and pushed home properly? are the Plug Leads ok? Is the connection to the coil plugged in properly?

To set the dizzy properly you must remove it from the block, turn the engine to TDC (on compression stroke for cyl #1) re-seat the dizzy and align the 'finish' mark with the rotor.

Are all your spark leads connected correctly?

distributer in a second handy but was working fine on the old engine. as far as i can tell everything is connected properly and i am getting spark to all cylinders, but one thing is i can hear the injectors clicking and can feel the pressure in the fuel line but my plugs are dry. i will pull the fuel rail out and see if there spraying.
