Default Where USA graduate engineers want to work

Universum has just released its 2020 report as to where US engineering students which to work once they have completed their degree.
  1. Tesla
  2. Space X
  3. Lockheed Martin
  4. Google
  5. Boeing
  6. NASA
  7. Apple
  8. Microsoft
  9. Disney
  10. Amazon
  11. Northrop Grumman
  12. Ford
  13. General Electric
  14. DoD
  15. General Motors
  16. BMW
  17. Boston Dynamics (robotics)
  18. Exxon
  19. Johnson&Johnson
  20. Nike
  21. Toyota

The conclusion that I draw is that Tesla is still drawing the biggest pool of applicants. This gives Tesla the opportunity to pick the best and brightest engineers. Ford have done OK, climbing up from 16th position last year. Maybe there has been some improvements at Ford given the gripes last year from the young engineers how staid the engineering culture was.

Tech Writer: Recognition for the technical writers of AFF - Issue reason: Outstanding work on the FG ICC issues. Technical Contributor: For members who share their technical expertise. - Issue reason: The insane amount of work he has put into the Falcon FG ICC is unbelievable. He has shared everything he has done and made a great deal of it available to us all. He has definitely helped a great deal of us with no personal gains to himself.

4, 7, 8 & maybe 10 and some others lower down - sounds about right. When I did my science degree at ANU, a lot of the engineering students (which were often in my classes) went straight into IT when they got their degree. I might as well include #1 too in that lot. The "engineering" degree though gave exceptions others didn't get, like only having to do 6 months of chemistry to get 1 point, where normally you would need the full 12 months to get the 2 points towards your degree. Hmmm, the hard stuff came in the 2nd half of the course. I would only conclude the young grads are looking for where the hard work is already done, sorting out best and brightest is up to the companies. There will be plenty of disappointments though, on both sides.

One of my colleagues completed his mechanical engineering degree then migrated to Australia after some time in the oil and gas industry back home.

He said that engineers mostly end up in IT or poached by the finance industry as that's where the money and opportunities are.

We lost a really talented young electrical engineer to the finance industry, a big blow to our capability.

My concern is that anyone that has any talent goes to the US.

We need to invest in this ****. But we're still stuck digging **** out of the ground.

Certainly, spending a stint working in the USA or Europe is valuable for some. Sure, some will end up staying there. However, a significant proportion will return back to Australia with enhanced skills. For example, if you look through the bios of cardiothoracic surgeons, nearly all of the surgeons who do the advanced stuff have spent time acquiring those skills in either the USA or UK, and have subsequently returned back to Australia.

And it is not all one way traffic. There are plenty of immigrants, with some really advanced skills, who have moved to Australia for the lifestyle.

My sister spent a good few years in San Diego working at a private lab (Scripps) and now she's back in Brisbane.

...has a PhD now too

These are the smart ones. Expand your knowledge any way you can.

I've done a 8 year stint in Europe. I learnt a hell a lot more over there than my time here in Aus. I now have better experience and make way more than the locals here.

While there’s money in it, an overpriced housing situation, ans a government you wouldn’t trust so far as you can throw a marshmallow - why would people choose differently? We consistently demean those who make socially skewed or altruistic choices.

As to “****” - plenty of money in getting that right/neat. There possibly shouldn’t be, but most people don’t want to get their hands dirty anymore.

The local Victorian medical development companies are going gangbusters at the moment with the emphasis that Covid 19 has given. Many related streams of Engineering there. When I was working in that industry I found that many of them came from the automotive field. Tesla was advertising for automotive sector Engineers around the time of the car industry shutdown and I know of some who went to work there. Some firms hire undergraduates during their break as a way of cherry picking the best and offer them positions when they graduate.

Any side they can grease their grubby little political hands on. Doesn't matter which party.

Our smaller economy, far distance and small population makes it difficult to retain and attract, that is just part of a world economy with labour mobility.
