Nope it will be "Football, Meatpies, Kangaroos and Asian cars".

Ford will be the next to go once Kia and Hyundai sort their utes out and those sales start to drop!

Personally, I have no interest in owning a dead brand. It was OK whilst Holden existed to own legacy models like Commodore, but not now.

Wouldn't be surprised if the value of collectable Holdens starts to come down now and pulls Ford GTs with it.

And there it is. Although all signs were pointing to the inevitable, I was somewhat numbed by today's announcement. A sad day for Australia.

This actually makes me Angry.

They are talking about 600 jobs losses at Holden.

There are 250 odd Holden dealers here in Australia, let’s roll that up and understand what the real number is ( including all of the support business job losses).

This was going to happen, but it’s terrible for our Australian Heritage.

Ford Australia

1/1 - All of us here at Ford Australia are saddened to hear the news that Holden will cease operations. Holden is an iconic brand that holds a special place in the heart of many Australians, and has done so much to shape the Australian automotive industry and the country...

2/2 - Its vehicles have been worthy competitors both on road and on the racetrack. To our friends at Holden, thank you for keeping us on our toes and inspiring us to keep aiming higher. We will miss you.

On the December 2nd last year, Dave Buttner suddenly resigns with no explanation. I guess we know when the decision to retire the Holden brand was made.

A sad day for lovers of the brand but hardly a shock, the actions of GM over the last 18 months all to obvious this was going to happen. No sympathy from me, the brand only has it's self to blame.

No sympathy for who? GM or the employees, dealers and the wider network, and even Holden fans in general?

While it is sad, businesses shut down all the time. There has been a real spate of them recently, especially in retail. I'm in the printing game. Many have shut down in recent times. It is no more unfortunate for a Holden employee than for many other people also out of work.

My sympathies are for all who worked for Holden or the dealers. I don't give and have never given a toss for the brand.

And sympathies to the Australian psyche which has been severely bruised by the killing of something which has been ingrained into this country's culture.

I'm sure there wouldn't be a single one of us diehard Ford fans , many of which are AFF members of course who wouldn't be sad about this.

So , There would be no chance that GM itself will deal in Australia ?

The other thing is HSV...I suppose they could continue , couldn't they because their great products are already Chevrolet anyway Camaro , Silverado, Sportcat etc.

Won't bloody Cadogen (smug git) be bouncing all over this as he drives another stake into the now deceased Holden brand .

Holden has a lot to be proud of that's for sure ..So disappointing for the loyal Holden boys and girls all over Australia .

As Holden died in 2017, the burial is well overdue. The carcass was rotten and stinking.

That’s a stupid cynical post.

Yes, Holden are a great Australian Brand, they made cars for this great country and employed many Australians for many years, they were one of our country’s great Icons.

Now they are basically gone.

Now go away and float your boat.

It is also tied up with the sale of their plant in Thailand to Great Wall and other pull backs globally.
The bottom line is GM is globally under siege.

Currently, GMs global budget to develop EV and Hybrid vehciles is $13 billion
VAGs budget for the same time period is $54 billion

You dont have to be a mystic to predict where this is going to end up.

RIP old foe, but the truth be told you where sold up the river without a paddle.
Ford dedicated one of its 3 global engineering hubs here and provides great employment and tech development in Aus. GM invested nothing. Ever.

I mean they probably looked in to it but I’m surprised the brand and it’s dealer network wasn’t offloaded to a company that could feed a new and different product line to it rather than just wind it up completely.
The majority of service departments will likely stay because they’ll be linked to other brands I would imagine

GM are either the most brilliant car company in the world for being the only company to realise their is no money in RHD cars, or the dumbest, for being the only company that can't make money in RHD markets........

I suspect the later...

Couldn't agree more ,spot on . Never mind what has happened in the past few years with things Holden and Ford did or didn't do . That's not the really the issue here . The fact is that Holden built some bloody good cars for a demanding country for many decades and so did Ford .

Both companies built cars , wagons , utes , vans , luxury , coupe's and SUV's like Territory here with our people for our people and employed a lot of Aussies in the factories and via parts makers and dealerships . Most of the time while fighting big brother GM and Ford for development permissions and money .

In more recent times decisions could have been made that might not have been that great it seems but no-one can deny that the last cars that rolled off the factory floors ,mostly locally designed and developed via Holden's VE/VF Commodore and Ford's FG/FGX Falcon and Territory in particular are bloody beaut cars by any standard .

Like Fordman said ...Get it right , hugely Australian companies in reality no matter where the parent companies were located .

The company existed for 164 years - founded in 1856. According to Wikipedia Holden even built Model T's in the early years - news to me.

So as an Aussie company they are really quite special. I owned, in order, an EH wagon, LJ Torana, EH sedan, LX Hatchback, HJ Premier, VK Director, VT Berlina. I've owned more Holdens than Fords

I would be happy to have any one of those cars today - actually, you can keep the VT, a good car but an AU is a far better car. The LX is the one I should never have sold.

I hope all of those directly and indirectly employed by Holden find work quickly.

The issue with engineers in the automotive industry is they seem to be hired on a temp/casual basis for projects then they get let go between projects - there's no more perminent full time work for them available, if there is its rare as hens teeth.

Shame it's come to this but it was inevitable, fords message was well made, unlike the smug grins and comments from holden management at the time of fords announcement to leave Australian manufacturing.
We all knew ford would survive longer.
Guess the real shock will now be with supercars, hell knows what the teams will race now, will it be the mustang cup?
Will holden even go ahead with it's sponsorship of teams now that they have made this announcement before the seasons start?

Vale gallant competitor. Could Australia switch to left hand drive ?
Logistically, it would be a nightmare. Sweden did it , years ago. Or, allow left hand drive cars on our roads as Britain does.

We dont need them. We have more brands and more models on sale here than anywhere in the world. RHD hardly seems to be the problem for the rest of the auto manufacturers.
Unfortunately (or fortunately) you are simply watching the start of the total demise of GM globally. Too fat too slow too deaf too lazy.
