Seriously did you read the article??? I also heard this on the radio on the way into work this morning and they said (which is also in the article) that they are not easy to steal but they are targeted because of the high demand for spare parts. Some of these cars are being stolen with their own keys because some people can be so careless around car parks etc., sometimes.

But more dangerously, people are more increasingly being burgled in the middle of the night with the sole intention of just taking the keys. I know because I had a mate that twice has had this happen to him 18 months apart about seven years ago in Perth. He had two small children at home at the time.

Default Holden Commodores the number one choice for car thieves

I think the writer owns a Holden but still not something I would think is a selling point

http://www.news.com.au/business/stor...65-462,00.html

Quote:
Most stolen car figures released
Commodores fill seven of top 15 spots
Vehicle theft has dropped in recent years
EVEN car thieves prefer Commodores. Australia's most popular family sedan has topped an insurance poll of the most stolen car.

An analysis of AAMI insurance claims showed early model Holden Commodores filled seven of the top 15 most stolen models in NSW, rising to nine out of 15 on a national basis.

The most popular target for thieves was the 1999 VT Commodore Executive, with 90 claims in NSW and 150 across the country, The Daily Telegraph reports.

Hyundai's 1996 Excel (87) was second in NSW while another Commodore, the 1998 VT Berlina took silver on a national basis.

Ford's Falcon was ignored by NSW thieves, missing a spot on the top 15 table. But the Blue Oval's 1999 AU Forte was ranked third nationally, with 128 stolen.

AAMI corporate affairs manager Mike Sopinski said it wasn't surprising 1990s makes and models featured prominently on the list.

"Vehicle theft has dropped remarkably over the past 10 years, primarily because of advances in technology and theft deterrents such as engine immobilisers," he said.

Mr Sopinski said the dominance of Commodores on the list had nothing to do with a lack of security.

"They are a victim of their popularity, with professional thieves seeking to cash in on strong demand for spare parts," he said.

The AAMI data mirrored National Motor Vehicle Theft Reduction Council figures, which showed three times as many Commodores than Falcons were stolen so far this year.

According to the council's figures, 1767 Commodores were stolen compared to 507 Falcons and 288 Hyundai Excels.

Mr Sopinski said there are some simple steps owners can take to make their cars less appealing to thieves.

"At a basic level, drivers can be doing a lot more to keep their car safe and secure, such as parking in well-lit places, always locking doors and windows, and keeping personal items like sunglasses, handbags and portable music devices hidden," she said.

While commonsense steps are effective, more sophisticated theft deterrents such as car alarms and engine immobilisers offer the best protection from car thieves, according to Mr Sopinski.

"Three in five drivers have an immobiliser fitted to their car and two in five have an alarm . . . typically these devices are standard features of most new cars, which explain why so few new cars are stolen," he said.

Industry figures show that engine immobilisers are fitted to about 45 per cent of all vehicles in Australia, but only 7 per cent of stolen vehicles have the devices.

Arent these the same damn car? It's like comparing Fortes/XT with Futura's...

Maybe the RTA can recycle their ads and get the scene of that Blue VL doing a S*** drift and put a slogan that says "Next Time, Don't Park In Maquarie Fields"

or Ford could even use it and have something that says: "Falcons.... Bogans Just Dont Get Em!"

It's excellent for Holden's new car sales. If people keep stealing them, Holden owners have to keep on buying new ones. That's how they stay at number 1.

We've been giving a mate a really ribbing since GM filed for bankruptcy saying that he won't be able to get spares for the Chevadore

Mate, Holden don't receive bad press because they a re a huge advertiser in these papers as well as other arenas and as such, the publisher would be down right stupid to marginalise one of his biggest clients.

This kind of journalism and protectionism is evidenced by the recent articles alleging that chemists have been ripping people off, when both Woolworths (bastards) and Coles (slightly lesser bastards) are vying for the chemist action. Then, pharmaceutical goods will be all controlled by the big two players and they'll set their own price. Worse than that, think of the indescretion; "Can I have a price check on 'Comfy Pop' incontinence pads aisle 2 please?"

Digg thisPost to del.icio.usPost to Stumble UponPost to FacebookIT APPEARS even car thieves want their Fords.

Analyses by insurance giant AAMI yesterday revealed the most stolen car in Victoria was the 1999 Ford AU Falcon.

With 79 claims, the Falcon headed the list of the top 15 vehicles stolen from AAMI customers last year.

All the Holden Commodore models accounted for more overall thefts, making up 46 per cent of claims.

Only 21 per cent of vehicles stolen were Fords.

Are Falcons really worth telling? Tell us using the feedback form below

The most nicked list also included the 2004 Toyota Corolla, 2005 Honda Accord, the 2000 and 2001 Mitsubishi Lancer and the 1998 Hyundai Excel.
When it came to tracking the number of Fords stolen nationally, the local carmakers' popularity declines rapidly.

Only one Ford, the 1999 Falcon, made the top 15 in a list of theft claims Australia wide.

The 1999 Holden Commodore, however, accounted for 150 insurance claims and topped the list.

More broadly, Commodores of all makes and models made up 62 per cent of vehicles stolen from the insurer's clients last year.

AAMI corporate affairs manager Mike Sopinski said it was not surprising to see so many Commodores on the list.

"They are a victim of their own popularity, with professional thieves seeking to cash in on strong demand for spare parts," Mr Sopinski said.

He said there was plenty people could do to make their cars less desirable for thieves.

"Park in well-lit places, always lock doors and windows and keep personal items like sunglasses, handbags and portable music devices hidden," he said.
