We have a 2003 focus with a problem with the instrument cluster... regularly drops out.
Research on the net shows this is obviously a widely known problem. Does anyone know if Ford Aust are accepting any responsibility by way of recall or subsidy for fixing the problem? Thanks |

None whatsoever I believe. I have the same problem but haven't asked the question directly.
The best fix I have hear of is to remove the instrument cluster and spray the back of it with WD40 or similar, and allow to dry. I believe the problem is caused by something called dry solders

Oh, dry solder...if that's the case, pull the cluster out, take it to an electrical repair place (like TV repairers for example) and ask them to re-solder the joints. I doubt it'd cost much, maybe $50 max? And you'll never have the problem again. WD40 won't do much except keep moisture off, and make it a to work on if you do need to get it re-soldered.

As some of you may be aware my '03 LR LX's instrument cluster has strange things going on with warning lights flickering. I've got another theory on why it's failed......another common failure is the Cowl. A small amount of water got in through the cowl and the screen so MAYBE this has caused the joints to get wet and hence the failure. Just a theory. I'll make enquiries with my local guy and see what they think. Beats shelling out over $1K for an Instrument Cluster if it fixes the problem.

I have a 2003 Focus and have similar problems with my instrument cluster. Two Ford dealers could not find anything wrong and suggested sendin it to Evertec in Sydney to have it repaired. I replaced the unit with a second hand one with the same part number. The PC board on the old one had several burnouts on it so it is not repairable anyway.
My problem now is the replacement cluster has the ABS and red brake warning lights permanently lit because the car does not have ABS, it's a 2 litre auto hatch CL basic model. My question is can the new cluster be reprogrammed to tell the cluster that the car does not have ABS? I did a search of this Forum and couldn't find an answer to my question. |
