Default TDCI Fuel consumption

Just want to know what is the average fuel consumpion on a TDCI is, mine is doing an average of 7.5 LPH around town, I do about 40kms a day! No where near what ford suggests, in the 5-6 LPH. Also, My TDCI tends to blow a lot of smoke when I have the family in the car!(Four people) It has done 18000kms, took it to ford they did a diagnostic on it, they said everything was within paramiters????

Every car's official fuel figures are very conservative. The only way I can get under 7.1 on my petrol Focus is to accelerate very smoothly around town and leave a good gap from the car infront, and only drive at 100kmh on the freeway. Keep in mind 5-6 is combined cycle city and highway driving.

Also with the smoke that's probably from the overboost feature. Most diesels do that under wide open throttle.

I take the M5 in the morning so you know flogging it won't get anywhere quicker. I have a game I play, where you gain a point when the car in front's brake lights go off but you don't need to apply yours due to the gap you leave, and you lose a point every time someone merges in front of you.

Wow I really need to get a life.

I drive 240km's a day for work, from the gong to western suburbs, and I average around 5.3-5.4 atm, and that is with new full rubber tyres on (I used to get 5.0-5.2 on standards).

I average around 6 litres per 100klm but if you push the car or have heaps of stop starts it goes as high as 6.7 Lper100K. the instant fuel consumption figure can get really good at 60klm on the flat in 5th gear. Gives around 5.8 at 100klm on the freeway except when its flat and then it driops lower.

mine's been playing up lately.
i used to average about 5.7 doing freeway driving (110km/h) and 6.2 (or better) doing around town. so i'd always get at least 850km from a tank.

but in the last couple months, every time i fill up, the numbers just dont add up. i fill up when the range tells me there's less than 40km left, so i should be filling up pretty close to 50L (53L tank)....but no, i generally only get 44-47L in. then when i reset the trip computer, it tells me i only have 620 (or so) km range. as i drive more and use more fuel, the range (km done + range remaining) slowly starts to get back up to 750-800km
oh, and the average fuel consumption keeps resetting itself - so i could come home and park in the garage and it'll say 6.5L/100, then in the morning as soon as i'm out the driveway and check it again, it'll say 7.8L/100!!?!?!
starting to be a real PITA, cos i just can't trust how many km's i have left in a tank

mine sorta does the same.. like after filling up it will say only 680km but as i drive more and more (the current kms on that tank + the range) = 750+

i usually wait till the 80km light comes on then fill up.. when im at the bowser i get around 49-50km from memory

Fuel economy depends on where and how I drive.
Pottering locally around town with lots of start/stop = 6.5-7.5 l/100km.
Driving from Melbourne-Mt Gambier ( 1000km trip) - ave 6l/100km
Driving from Melton ( west of Melb) to Pakenham - 100km smooth freeway at either 80 or 100 - best has been 4.6l/100km.
General average - 5.5-6l/100km.

I find the smoothness of the road makes a huge difference. ie. smooth freeways get much better economy compared to rough bitumen country roads even though they're both dead flat.
Also a big difference between 80/100/110 speeds. Each 10km/h seems to add 0.5l/100km to the fuel economy.

I also notice fumes out the back under higher throttle loads. Especially on cold nights with a car behind. I suspect it's normal.

Yogi
your experiences match mine in the TDCI. car loves 80-90klm on the highway if you want economy. But that torque gives it plenty of Umpfff even in 6th gear. beats the petrol version hands down

Last week I drove mine until the Range said 0km, I filled it all the way up and there was about 3.5 litres left in the tank.

So there was still a bit left to go

I just purchased a 2008 TDCI (with 21k). Fuel consumption driving from Brisbane to Cairns were:

1. Brisbane to Mackay (10 hrs @ 94kph) = 5.5l/100k
2. Mackay to Cairns (7hrs @ 90kph) = 5.1/100k

Just did some light urban work today and still got 5.9l/100k. More significant than the fuel figures is the very stong and impressive mid-range torque that allowed me to steam past convoys of slower vehicles on the highway. I am sure that my previous car (2004 Vectra CDXI 3.3 manual) was not any faster between 90-130 kph when overtaking.
