Default Great Wall 'Cannon' ute has the others in the firing line..

In the Endura thread I mentioned China is into what I believe it's second generation of utes in our market.

Here is the GW Cannon:

Quote:
2021 GWM Cannon ute from $33,990 to $40,990 drive-away, on sale this week

China’s Great Wall Motors ute has had its biggest overhaul in more than a decade. New hi-tech model promises five-star safety, gets more equipment than Toyota Hilux, Ford Ranger and Isuzu D-Max at a fraction of their price.

The pioneer of Chinese vehicles in Australia – Great Wall Motors – has delivered its biggest overhaul in more than 10 years, and is poised to shake-up the affordable end of the double-cab ute market.

The 2021 GWM Cannon is an all-new model with more technology than the segment leaders – and more equipment than the Toyota Hilux, Ford Ranger, Isuzu D-Max and Mazda BT-50 at a fraction of their price.

While Great Wall Motors will move away from its current bargain-basement $19,990 drive-way offers on its range of outdated vehicles, the new-generation GWM Cannon promises to undercut the competition by a significant margin.

Three models in the GWM Cannon ute range – priced from $33,990 drive-away, $37,990 drive-away and $40,990 drive-away – are available for similar money as lower grades of the Mitsubishi Triton, but come with equipment found on $60,000-plus utes.

While the original Great Wall Motors utes got off to a bumpy start, with a two-star safety rating in 2009 – backed up by another “poor” two-star safety rating with an update released in 2016 – the GWM Cannon promises to make up for lost ground with a fully-loaded pick-up that will leave previous excuses behind.

The GWM Cannon is also likely to overshadow the LDV T60, the first ute out of China with a five-star safety rating (from 2017). However, the GWM Cannon has a longer list of standard equipment than even its closest Chinese rival.

The GWM Cannon ute is yet to undergo a full round of crash safety assessment by the Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP), however it has the technology needed to achieve a five-star result against the latest, more stringent criteria.

All three examples of the GWM Cannon ute will join the new-generation Isuzu D-Max and Mazda BT-50 with a centre airbag between the front seats, a requirement to be eligible for a five-star safety result in 2020 – and which prevents head injuries in severe side impact crashes.

If the GWM Cannon achieves a five-star safety score, it will have done something the top-selling Toyota HiLux and Ford Ranger utes are yet to achieve, as their five-star results were graded against older and less stringent criteria (in 2019 and 2015 respectively).

As a result, the Toyota HiLux and Ford Ranger are missing much of the technology that will be standard in the new GWM Cannon.

Dimensions:

Length: 5410mm
Height: 1934mm
Width: 1886mm
Wheelbase: 3230mm
Ground clearance: 194mm
Wading depth: 500mm
Approach angle: 27 degrees
Departure angle: 25 degrees
Rampover angle: 21.1 degrees
Payload: 953kg (model yet to be specified)
Towing capacity: 2250kg (aiming for 3000kg)

2021 GWM Ute Australian pricing
GWM Ute Cannon automatic – $33,990 drive-away
GWM Ute Cannon-L automatic – $37,990 drive-away
GWM Ute Cannon-X automatic – $40,990 drive-away
https://www.caradvice.com.au/903135/...ale-this-week/

Quite a lengthy article...

However it does make a compelling financial argument compared to the rest of the market.

If you put the badge aside, the only things I can really fault is the engine size, ultra short service interval and lower tow capacity.

Engine power and tow capacity would be very easily fixed with a slightly larger engine. The servicing intervals need to be the industry standard 15,000km (but if it were 20k they would have further marketing clout).

I can just see the marketing department now...

'We blow the competition away'
'Give us a shot'
'We make fodder of the competition'
'We have the competition in our sights'..

As much as I always prefer Japanese and Korean cars if this continues my next new purchase may be from the CCP...

Yep it looks nice with bold statements but who is game enough to purchase one of these with regards to Chinese dubious quality.

People whinge about 'short' service intervals but 10,000km is ideal.

15,000km is too long and if its 20,000km+ then count on blocked oil galleries and all sorts of other lack of maintenance problems - VZ/VE/VF Commodore HF V6/LFX and L98/L77 engines have issues with their Dexos2 oil and 15,000km service intervals - timing chains and lifter problems anyone?

I don't care what anyone says, oil is cheap insurance and the more you do it the better.

All models come with four-wheel discs in a category where rear drums are the norm (the VW Amarok V6, LDV T60, Ssangyong Musso and Ford Ranger Raptor have four-wheel discs).
BuT yOu DoNt NeEd DiScS!!!!!1111 I hear our Thailand Special loving friends yell constantly.

When rear wheel cylinders are some of the most commonly purchased automotive repair parts in 2020, we've regressed about 40 years into the past it seems.

This things looks alright and pricing is on point - China special for Franco?

Petrol turbo 4 cylinder engine, 200KW/380NM and I'd be keen.

I'm still not convinced on these tiny diesel engines, got one in my Focus, its slow in that in a car that's circa 600kg lighter than the Thailand Specials.

This is China's 'coming of age' moment - look at the first Great Wall V240 that was introduced to our market like a decade ago, how far they have come within 10 or so years.

They may be cheap to buy but I bet the resale is terrible. You'd probably be better off buying a Triton or something if you are budget conscious.

I was offered $35k for my 5 year old Ranger XL the other day. Ξ bought it for a fraction over $40k. I've maybe spent 5k in mods. I don't see the GWM getting resale like that.

Bit of new BT50 front look.....
Good stuff I say, the chings will at least force Toy/Ford to re address their pricing sooner or later IF they gain some decent enough traction.
Franco, as you knon me for a while I'm a V8 luver and a small euro 2.0l T in my use.
Having had a Toy 4x4 Dual cab with the mighty powerful D4 (lol) for my daily use the last 5-6yrs incl holidays up north fully loaded they do the job brilliantly - it was my first ownership having one of these and I'll buy another in the future no worries.
Was reliable as now handed down to son no2, 200,000 clicks and done rear wheel cyclinders once. Rear shoes wear out quick but that was due to my driving - fit slotted front rotors with good pads the braking improved heaps and where it counts.
Heaps of cyclinders are sold for there are HEAPS of them out there last 15yrs as you know.

Agreed naddis, re sale would be woeful on these GW utes but those buyers are not fussed about that they had to buy "on price" in any case, a loss from the beginning.
I just like more competition in market, come on Hyundai/Kia.

Why would ford and toyota need to change their prices? They are selling in even bigger numbers, stealing sales from the cheaper stuff which is losing sales. Rivers of gold.

People who buy communist vehicles should hang their heads in shame, supporting a regime that is bullying us.

I agree about not supporting them BUT there is alot of consumers don't see it that way BUT price.
Sooner or later this rubbish won't be and consumers even more will accept their brands.
They will take sales from Triton and the other low volume brands growing their footprint.
In turn top end will react its the norm.

Someone who wants a new ute but can’t afford $65k for a Ranger doesn’t have anywhere else to go. Even Mitsubishi are trying to go higher in prices these days.

Personally I’ve been liking the look of LDV’s,I just can’t get my head around while they might be ok when new, how will they age once there’s a few km’s on the clock?

Let's put further context around this conundrum we face:

26/11/2020

We need China, WA iron ore sales are keeping this country afloat - because of lack of foresight by successive governments, we've neglected our national security and sovereignty, by placing all our eggs in one basket with a trading partner who does not share western values of freedom of speech, democracy and human rights.

As such, we will be investigating options to diversify our trade with other nations who may be interested in trade deals with our country, to prevent this becoming an issue again in the future.

It will be interesting to see these around. My biggest concern with these pick ups is that Chinese vehicle manufacturing is still pretty bad at quality control and reliability.

The Chinese local brands barely ever honour warranties, and imports into China simply wont (as was specifically said to me from Merc, BMW and Toyota dealers). So the speed at which reliability and known issues are addressed during new model roll outs are not to the speed most established brands can achieve.

I'm not surprised though about the tech jump, producing new tech is easy over there... but I'd be really concerned though about their quality levels. Not because the Chinese cant produce high quality stuff (they can and do), but simply because they will slash quality levels if it saves them cash without understanding the consequences. Its part and parcel of doing business over there.

The last attempt by GWC was atrocious, asbestos brake and clutch linings, guarantees that were not guarantees, warranty issues never sorted, certainly couldn't get close to carrying what they were rated for.

Attempt to put trade box on back of cab/chassis, cracked suspension and we hadn't put tools in at that stage.

Lease companies wont touch them.

Knew someone who bought a JMC ute, and it's engine died while still under warranty. However the company had since left Australia so no one was covering it and no one had parts.
Managed to get hold of the original selling dealer who luckily did everything they could to help him out. Still took months and months for a new engine to be located.

Had a 2.4 petrol motor which is a Mitsubishi clone.

BTW these Chinese brands arnt imported by their manufacturers like Ford and Toyota.
A third party imports them and takes responsibility for them. The issues lie in the third party being useless when it comes to warranty and parts supply.
