I was just wondering, when aff is going to upgrade vBulletin Version 4, ive seen all the great upgrades that you have over the last few months, is a chance we will eventually go to vBulletin Version 4. Thanks |

AFF is a very large and highly modified vB forum. Upgrading to version 4 is a major operation fraught with many obstacles and dangers.
If it ain't broke, don't fix it...... russellw, of course, will have the definitive answer as it is his forum. |

The definitive answer....
We are in final testing of a new server which is running vb3.8.5. As it is, that is a two stage upgrade process (from 3.0x to 3.5x and then to 3.8x) and there are 21 pages in the documentation I wrote for the upgrade process to ensure that all the add-ons and custom code work without a hitch. At the same time Photopost has been upgraded to the latest version and vbPortal (which runs tech) to 3.8.5. When the testing is completed we will ship the unit to San Diego and then migrate the current database to it. This will be a change from the current dedicated but hosted server to a co-located server of our own - the current one is almost 4 years old and apart from having some reliability issues it is simply not big enough for our needs. For those of a technical mind we will be migrating from a dual Athlon server with 4 Gb of PC233 RAM, 2x120 Gb SATA drives and vb3.0.8 to a Quad core Intel chassis with 4 x 3.0 Quad Core Xeon CPU's, 8 Gb of ECC buffered RAM, 12 port SAS RAID controller and 4 x 320 Gb 15k SAS drives (2 active, 1 hot spare, 1 warm spare), DAT 320 Tape drive and full redundancy of power supplies, fans, NICs and RAID controller. At the same time the operating system has been upgraded to 64 bit Fedora and mySQL to Enterprise Server Gold. We also now have a test server and will be eventually testing vb4.0 but it certainly isn't a priority at this stage. Cheers Russ

When where I worked for a while back first moved all their hosting servers over to 64bit and were put under load from a rogue customer script, the server handled it about 50x better compared to a 32bit system, and didn't lock up.

Just out of curiosity, for the layman, what differences are there between 3.0, 3.5, 3.8 and 4.0?
