Default Mayan - coundown

Does anyone know if the Mayan's used GMT for their time calculations ?

There is an internet countdown timer which is about 10 hours away from oblivion, and it uses GMT

For anyone who actually believes we will be wiped out tomorrow. This is from a FAQ page on NASA's website.
Quote:
Q: How do NASA scientists feel about claims of the world ending in 2012?
A: For any claims of disaster or dramatic changes in 2012, where is the science? Where is the evidence? There is none, and for all the fictional assertions, whether they are made in books, movies, documentaries or over the Internet, we cannot change that simple fact. There is no credible evidence for any of the assertions made in support of unusual events taking place in December 2012.
One thing I've been dealing with is family who are rather open to all kinds of eastern belief systems and actually believe something might happen. I said it was bull****, but I was dead wrong to them.

yes apparently the world will end because the calender stopped
maybe they ran out of ink, chalk, blood or whatever else they used to do the calender

also i believe they did not have just one calender?

and its just hte end of a cycle of 5000 years?
which is part of a bigger cycle of 26000?

dunno
read something about it a long time ago

but if anything was going to happen do you really think they wouldve set a time and date fro the next WWE ppv after the mayan date????

Vince doesnt like to waste money

what a load of ***** imo
no doubting that the climate is changing tho
ill do my bit if they do theirs
ill stop using nasty deodorant when they stop spraying in the skies

All the mayans ever mentioned about it, in the book of the people, was that its the end of one age and the start of another, the 5th age i think. Apocalypse to them means a great hidden truth is revealed, not a doomsday like most have had us think. theres money to be had and having doomsday hysteria takes focus off more important issues.
One of the only reasons why people started to believe that there could be a disaster is because previously when these ages have begun in mayans history, there has been a great cataclysm that has coincided with them.
in the end the mayan empire grew so large, they cut down all their trees, ended up with infertile land that could only grow few staples on and the population out grew what nature could provide, great foundation for disease and sickness which decimated the population. the decendants of the mayans still live close to their roots today but are in no way the empire they once were.

If the Mayans were any good at predicting the future, there would probably still be Mayans.

Agree with AGS302. How come they could predict the end of the world but not the Portuguese coming over the horizon?

Also, I don't think they accounted for leap years and the slight slowing of the Earth's rotation so the end of their calendar has probably well passed.

Not sure where I heard this but a few years back a TV reporter was interviewing a guy who was predicting the end of the world on a certain date. Went something like this, Reporter:" You are sure the world is going to end on (insert date here)?". Doomsday Dude:" Yes". Reporter:" Do you own a house and car?" Doomsday Dude:" Yes". Reporter:" As you won't be needing either of those items after (insert date here) would you agree to sign this document to donate the proceeds of your house and car to a charity of your choice to take effect on the day after (insert date here)". Doomsday Dude:" This interview is over".
