Question Q Police to extend speed cameras to suburban streets

Police to extend speed cameras to suburban streets
Article from: The Sunday Mail (Qld)

By Darrell Giles

December 20, 2009 12:00am

SPEED cameras are coming to a suburb near you.

In an unprecedented move, police will extend speed camera operations into suburban streets as part of the State Government's two-year Road Safety Action Plan.

And they could be in unmarked vehicles with no warning signs.

Police have been able to use speed cameras only where the speed limit is 60km/h or above, with hand-held radar in sub-60km/h zones.

But Police Minister Neil Roberts said laws would be introduced early next year for secret speed-camera vehicles to park in streets with 50km/h and 40km/h limits.

He said the speed limit enforcement mantra for 2010-11 was Anywhere, Anytime. "All streets and roads must be as safe as we can make them. Far too many people are dying unnecessarily on our roads," he said.

"Speeding and rat-running through suburban streets is also a significant concern in many communities.

"Motorists will need to consider whether the vehicle or motorcycle they are speeding past is an unmarked police vehicle or if the vehicle parked in their suburban street is fitted with a speed camera."

The Sunday Mail revealed exclusively last week a raft of new measures to catch speedsters as part of the Government's road safety program.

There will be undercover speed-camera vehicles with no warning signs, point-to-point speed cameras, and digital speed/red light cameras.

The covert vehicles will be in a variety of models, makes, ages and colours.

Drink-driving would also be targeted, with alcohol ignition interlock devices.

Mr Roberts yesterday said the significant change in policy reflected concern at a road toll likely to top 340 this year.

More wasted Police duties. Go catch some burglars instead of Mr smith trying to get to work on time. What happened to only setting up cameras in accident black spots?

we will become victorian's, with alot more unlicanced and uninsured drivers on the road, causing alot more grief because not only when they come unstuck does it cause you grief... there is no insurance to cover it.

people will be dicks no matter what, whats worse is when people think something is unjust they will choose to ignore it/rebel against it... you see problem is not fining everything that moves, its education.

wont solve the odd idiot doing 60k over in a suburban street but they are less likely to do so when they realise they arent as in controll as they thought they were pre defensive driver training..

argue all you like about it giving them a mentality they can speed, for alot of people it just makes them more aware drivers, and less likely to do dumb stuff in a closed enviroment when the odds are stacked against them.

the problem with this whole unmarked speed camera car thing is the offender might not even know that they have been caught speeding until they get the fine in the mail, so they will continue doing the same thing, so it is a delayed deterant, Bligh seems to be much more concerned with revenue raising than detering speeeding motorists

yea becuase the world is black and white...

so if you want to be a sheep and believe the propaganda that by more speed camera's will = less deaths then suit yourself.

but it comes down to the fact, for the past 10 years they have been sprooking the same ideas, bigger fines, more camera's, more loss of points... and STILL we have this road toll issue.

if they were SERIOUS about saving lives they would fund a better licance system, and do a mandatory retrain every 10-15 years and every 5 after you are 70.

want to reduce the road toll, get better solutions, not beat the same old dead horse.

and my comment from before still stands.

Agree 100% with your comment, all im saying is dont speed then you dont have to jump up and down,of course its the government trying to get your cash,if everyone stopped speeding then there would be no issue, they would find another way to steal your cash, least this way you are in control of your wallet by not speeding in the first place

Yes, but there is a chance that accidents will become much more common, as you have to watch the speedo 99.99% of the time you are driving!!! If you don't, the one time you actually watch the road - FLASH - Fine + Loss of points.

Yeh because in urban QLD where the speed limit can and often does change several times in a single block of a single street it FAR more important to be concentrating on your speedo than looking out for kids playing or dogs or pushbikes or cars backing out of driveways or potholes.

e.g. Main Street Hervey Bay (just around the corner from me)

80, 60, 50, 60, 40, 60, 70, 60, 50, 40.

BUT going over the same road in the other direction

40, 50, 60 70, 60, 80.

The only reason people "rat race" is because of the large amounts of roadworks going on in key areas. Seems the govt now want to profit from that too.

Can't wait for the next election so we can rid of that woman.

you dont have to look at the speedo 99.99% of the time, you get a feel over time of how fast your car is going, i know what 60 k feels like, and its just a case of a quick glance down to check speed, some of you guys are making a mountain out of a mole hill ! :togo:

No, you don't need to look au the speedo that often, but you have to think like the government. That is, think what the dumbest driver would do!

Speeding is not the issue here people. For all you with the "Dont speed, dont get fined" attitude, thats not the point. The point is that motorists in general are once again being targeted to raise money for a state that has a big cheque to cash. This is not about saving lives!!! Somebody with a sensible head on their shoulders will think about a problem and then about a solution which will be most affective. Speed is not killing people on our roads. People that dont know how to drive are. The majority of motorists here in QLD do not know what their indicators are for and as such fail to indicate correctly on the very simple roundabout situation. Another simple vehicle control procedure you see failed, most people will "Brake", "Come to a stop" (in the middle of stretch road) and then "indicate" to let the person behind know they are turning Right. By which time that person has already slammed into the back of them as they were watching their speedo instead of watching the idiot in front stop for "NO APPARENT REASON". Indicators by definition are to let other motorists know of your intentions, NOT to let your self know "oh yeah im turning here".

I am all for speed cameras in black spot, hell put them up everywhere. But dont be sneaky about it. Dont fine people who flash their lights, they are only helping slow people down, which is what they want...... Isnt it????? The autobahns in Germany will see people hit 200ks easily, but in Germany the motorists have impeccable driving skills. They stay in their lanes, they dont tailgate etc etc. Their licenses are much harder to obtain and vehicles have to under go regular road worthy checks. The still have speed cameras, but they dont rely on them, and they are not sneaky about their operation.

My concern is the waterfall of regulation being shoved down our throats. The second line of the national anthem no longer carries any truth. The internet will now be censored, meaning this site could very well in the future be off limits due to the fact that i dont agree with the governments political standings in this very post. How long before all cars are monitored by GPS, meaning even you guys again with your "Dont speed, dont get fined" attitude, accidentaly noticed your cruise control has slipped to 61 in a 60 zone. Fairly soon none of us will be able to drive, fly, leave the house incase somebody gets a scratch or a cut, let alone lose their life. We dont need to be wrapped in bubble wrap.

you saved me 10 minutes of writing :sm_headba

so the answer is to just not speed?

yea ok, but is speeding doing 120 in a 100 in perfect weather and well maintained vehicle or 80 in an 80zone in an SE qld storm? because according to the 'just dont speed' idea then ill be far safer doing 80 in a blizzard while skateing on black ice... so long as i dont hit the fearful 81kmh I wont die?

How many times in VIC alone have the cam's been shut down due to inaccuracy's?.. people just pay up they dont fight it becuase most are just like lamb's to the slaughter house and just accept what the government says goes, if you want to take the easy approach fine your entilted to your oppinion no matter how wrong it is.

So are we a Democratic Nation with rights?

This federal government is sneaking or steamrolling a whole range of measures through the parliament (and some not through the parliament) without proper public exposure or debate, and to which the majority of electors are clearly opposed, despite spurious claims of ‘mandates’: the GST, the sale of Telstra and other public assets, the soon to be revived MAI, the signing of the Fifth Protocol to the GATS, the censorship of the Internet, the new ASIO Act, the Republic and proposed changes to the Constitution, the manipulation of the political process to exclude One Nation, and the list goes on and on. All of these measures serve to further the globalisation programme, and it is all being done in a big hurry, as though the government has a deadline to meet.

The Russians and the Chinese are getting more freedom and we are going the opposite way -----

They have had speed cams in Suburban streets in SA for years , they sometimes park outside my house. When I park my car in front of them they try and make me move it, but there is no legeslation to back them up. Here is punch line, they just move the car up the road no speed check no agle check nothing just go on as if it had not been moved.

I wonder how many people on this forum and in Queensland REALLY car about saving lives and the well being of others MORE than their wallet and licence...

The way I see it, if your not speeding you have got nothing to worry about.

More money to the government I say, at least the dipshits who can't drive will be funding it. I can live with the occasional speeding fine by mistake, cost nothing compared to owning a car in the first place. I spend $3000 on fuel a year for cryiung out loud. Whats a fine or two...
